That is certainly possible, and we should definitely
avoid any such implantation, but I think we need to
realize the breadth of possibilites for the mark
of the beast so that we aren't surprised at all by
ones we might not have expected.

The "mark" of Revelation 13:16-17 is Strong's Greek
#5480, the literal definition of which is "a scratch
or etching". The mark could therefore be placed on
the surface of the skin through scarification with a
knife, for the English definition of scarification is
"to make scratches", just as the Greek definition of
"mark" is "a scratch or etching". This crude method
would make the most sense in the dire times of the
tribulation, when the simplest and crudest methods
will have to serve in order to do many things.

Strong's definition of "mark" also says that it is
a "stamp, as a badge of servitude", and I even read
somewhere that it was the word used for the brands
placed on camels. So we should not be surprised if
people will be required to be scarified in order to
be branded like slaves or cattle. No doubt even this
could somehow be sold to the public as no different
than Revelation 7:3, 9:4, 14:1, and 22:4, which
refer to God placing His seal and name upon
believers' foreheads, although in those cases the
work "mark" isn't used, for God doesn't treat us
like slaves or cattle, but as beloved children. God
doesn't carve his name on us with a knife, but
tenderly seals us with His precious Holy Spirit
(Eph.1:13).

Now, in whatever fashion the mark will be placed upon
mankind by the Antichrist, note that after the Bible
says that all people will one day have to receive "a
mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And
that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the
mark," it adds "the name of the beast, or the number
of his name" (Revelation 13:16-17), that is, the mark
will be a name or a number placed on the hand or
forehead.

The Bible goes on to explain that "the number of the
name" of the Antichrist is 666 (Revelation 13:18).
Now we should expect that the man who will want his
name or number placed on every single person in the
world would also want it placed on every single THING
in the world as well. And we shouldn't be surprised
if the number placed on things were implemented some
years before the number placed on people, especially
if the number placed on things could be disguised in
various ways which people wouldn't at first
recognize.

Let's look at three ways the Antichrist has already
placed his number on almost everything. First, the
internet: Note that some websites don't yet require
"WWW" to be placed in front of their address for them
to work, yet for some reason "WWW" has been placed
on almost every one of the billions and billions
of web pages on the internet. Now, you may ask,
what's wrong with "World Wide Web"? Nothing. But
what about "WWW"? Are you aware that the 6th letter
of the Hebrew alphabet is transliterated as "W", and
that in Hebrew it also stands for the number 6? In
this way, the Antichrist has been able to place 666
on almost every web page in the world, even on those
of most churches!

Now let's get offline to get away from 666 and go to
the supermarket to buy some food. But what do we find
there? On every single item has been placed a UPC
symbol. Now, you may ask, what's wrong with
"Universal Product Code"? Nothing. But what about
those two thin lines that we find at the beginning,
middle, and end of almost every UPC code? Are you
aware that under the UPC system those two thin lines
also represent the number 6? In this way the
Antichrist has placed 666 on almost everything that
we buy or sell, even Bibles!

Now let's leave the supermarket (or the bookstore)
and go home and take a cool refreshing drink out of
our refrigerator. Ah, what's this? That new drink
the kids are all raving about -- you know the one.
Whether as a joke or not, its logo is made up of
three Hebrew letters in a row -- not transliterated
letters like "W", but the actual Hebrew letter-form,
which looks like a nail with its head bent off to
the left. Put three of these in a row and it looks
like an English letter, which is the first letter of
the name of the drink. And just to make sure you
don't miss it, written on the side of the can in
clear English is a phrase that makes plain what is
hoped the drink will let loose. Now you may think
this drink is all a stupid joke, and it may be, but
what I found most insidious was that those three
Hebrew letters on that can look just like three
slashes made by a knife. Could that be what the
mark will look like when it's carved into people's
foreheads?

And those three nails, those three Hebrew letters,
do they not represent the three nails that
crucified Christ, that is, will they not represent
the Antichrist's claimed victory over Christ, so
that your agreeing to have them carved into your
forehead will be the sign, the token, that you have
freely agreed with all of the rest of mankind that
"Christ is Defeated, And 666 Rules The World!"

You may laugh; you may think how utterly stupid
all of this is! But we shall see what happens...

"And the third angel followed them, saying with a
loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his
image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in
his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the
wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture
into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be
tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of
the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever
and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who
worship the beast and his image, and whosoever
receiveth the mark of his name. Here is the patience
