UW researchers say California study results are no surprise
A new study released by scientists at the University of California -
San Diego says all of the existing federally funded stem cell lines are
contaminated, but UW researchers say this is no surprise. According to
Terry Devitt, UW director of research and communications, the human
embryonic stem cells are grown in a culture that includes animal cells.
He says the presence of animal cells compromises the use of these stem
cell lines in treating humans, but these cell lines were developed for
research, never intended for use in humans.
''It's always been known that new lines would need to be derived and
grown in the absence of animal cells for those to be useful in the
clinic.'' Devitt says.
He adds, they are working on a way to grow human stem cells without the
animal cells, but it is just one of the challenges ahead.
Researchers say they will need new, uncontaminated stem cell lines for
the clinical studies, but that won't happen for at least five years.
The Bush administration in 2001 limited federal funding for new stem
cells, but Devitt says the research can still be done with private
funds.
This type of stem cell research is controversial because human embryos
have to be destroyed to harvest the cells. Researchers say stem cells
may hold the cure to many health problems, including Parkinson's
disease, alzheimers, diabetes and spinal cord injuries.

Embryos that will be destroyed whether their stem cells are put to use

And cretinists want to make sure that if such science DOES come to
pass the US will have to pay other countries to benefit from it.

Here's the deal: If you want to ban stem cell research, ban abortion.
If you can't ban abortion, don't ban stem cell
research....to many people may benefit enormously and its an unfortunate
bi product of a sleazy, but legal practice.
I find stem cell research terribly offensive, as I find abortion
terribly offensive, but what I find more offensive is not permitting
stem cell research when stem cells are available.
I don't have religious scruples about abortion, I just have certain
absolutes...why should women be permitted to kill
children because they were too ignorant, lazy, or stupid to take the
pill? Cry me a river. I have listened to women whine about how they
aren't "ready" for such a burden....abstinence is a choice, or take some
responsibility for your own body for Christsake...OOPs.
If a woman wants privacy she should take the pill and not tell anyone
about it...that is a right to privacy...not killing your baby.
Life should have consequences. If the women don't want the children
give them up.,,or maybe use some common sense.
Ok, rape victims, etc. have a valid point and of course should be
permitted a choice. Sometimes a choice has to be made and the victim
should be the one to make it.
I know it is just my opinion, but I don't think an unresonable one.

Why? Stem cells can be obtained without abortions.

I don't have religious scruples about abortion, I just have certain
absolutes...why should women be permitted to kill
children because they were too ignorant, lazy, or stupid to take the
pill?

How about pregnancies occurring WITH the pill (and a condom)?
Women who have had their tubes tied have later conceived.
Women have gotten pregnant, then have found out that the pregnancy was
threatening their health or life.

Cry me a river. I have listened to women whine about how they
aren't "ready" for such a burden....abstinence is a choice

So is having sex. Neither one should carry any inherent burden.

If a woman wants privacy she should take the pill and not tell anyone
about it.

And if she gets pregnant anyway?

Life should have consequences.

What 'consequences' should sex have for a man?

If the women don't want the children give them up.

And if a woman doesn't want pregnancy?

Ok, rape victims, etc. have a valid point and of course should be
permitted a choice.

Then you're NOT against killing a fetus, you're against women having
the right to have sex without fear of pregnancy if birth control
fails.

I know it is just my opinion, but I don't think an unresonable one.

If you're not a pregnant woman, trying to be part of the decision
about abortion is unreasonable.

Adult stem cells are one thing, creepy as that sounds, but embryonic
stem cells are another matter. To create life only so that we may kill
it for science is barbaric in it's reasoning. I'll leave it for the
sages to dispute whether these lives constitute the definition of
"human being". We all have to die from something; killing to pro-long
the life of a sick person is itself sick.

The government prohibits funding for stem cell research if the cells
derive from embryos that are going to be destroyed whether stem cells
are harvested or not (in vitro fertilization usually results in more
embryos than are wanted), so the reason the embryos exist and their
eventual fate don't change in the slightest whether stem cells are
harvested or not.
The ONLY choice is do we destroy the entire embryo or do we first
harvest the stem cells and then destroy the rest of the embryo. Not
harvesting the stem cells before destroying the embryo is sheer
stupidity - something this administration is exceptionally good at.
Stem cell harvesting should be REQUIRED, unless the donors
specifically request that it not be done. (I think stem cell
harvesting of umbilical cord blood should also be mandatory when
practical, with the same provision.)

We all have to die from something; killing to pro-long
the life of a sick person is itself sick.

Using science to turn a sick person into a healthy person isn't,
especially if, as in the case of harvesting embryonic stem cells from
in vitro fertilization, nothing is being killed IN ORDER TO treat the
sick person, but feel free to never use medical science again if you
think doing so is sick.

I'm guessing here, but I suspect that you don't hold a PhD in Molecular

Whether or not you find it "ghoulish and repugnant", stem cell research
could lead to new treatments for diseases that would make the invention of
antibiotics and public sanitation pale in comparison. Of course, you
