One of my cow-orkers thinks the "Blue Laws" (no stores open on Sundays,
period) need to be reinstated and enforced because of the rampant
secularism in this country.
He doesn't even go to church; it's mostly because he doesn't want to work
on Sundays.

We have "Blue Laws" where I live (Bergen County, NJ) and they're a bit of a
mixed blessing. While it's a pain to not be able to go to certain stores on
a Sunday (though you could run to another county), the lack of traffic on
the highways is fantastic. I've lived her all but 6 years of my life so I'm
pretty used to it at this point. Not to mention that it doesn't mean that
ALL stores are closed on a Sunday, just a lot of them.

A bit over twenty years ago (but less than thirty) in NJ there was one
community where you would not have seen any cars on the road on
Sunday; driving was illegal on Sundays (except for emergencies).

Interesting - Looks like it didn't last long though. How bizarre for a
shore town. The loss of revenue in the summer would be ridiculous.
BTW, in proper NJ-speak, it's "down the shore" ;)

Hmm I think quite a long time (circa 1870 to 1979 when it was struck
down as unconstitutional). Note the community catered for the Sunday
observant crowd.

It also seems to have been involved in the Women's Suffrage Movement
(probably because of the close connection of that movement to the
Temperance movement).

I guess I've been out of NJ too long. I lived near the shore (and not
too far from Ocean Grove) for 12 years.

Well my parents seemed to prefer the middle of winter ideally during a
storm to go to the shore (usually Sandy Hook but that was when it was
not yet a national seashore); if we went during the summer we usually
walked a fair bit to get away from the crowds. It has been over 25
years since I've been to the Jersey shore and I think things have
changed a bit.

Why should religious idiots be the only people who get to have a proper
day off with everybody else each week?
I have never had a job which didn't involve 7 day a week working but
likewise Sunday has always been a day of shorter hours. That's great.
In Britain most shops are limited to 6 hours of trading on Sundays, a
nice happy medium between the convenience of weekend shopping and retail
workers having some time at home with the whole family.
Keep Sunday special, but not *that* special.
I once spent a week in Wales one Sunday. Everything was shut: shops,
pubs, thighs, everything. Now there's dull for you boyo.

He's not even particularly devout (or just hides it). I think Sunday's his
golf day.

At least it's kind of logical... if this coworker is willing to do some
planning-ahead (i. e. having bought on Saturday already what he needs on
Sunday), why not? ;)

Of course not, but then thinking is unknown territory for him.

He wants it to apply to everyone else--but I didn't ask his reasoning.
His version of logic just makes my head hurt.
