Not necessarily - in my native county (Harlan) in Kentucky, the public schools
started their third week of the new school year today (Thursday).

It's been interesting, watching the local districts here around Baghdad on the
Bayou shift their schedules over the years. When I finished high school, no
one ran their school year into June, but HISD and some of the suburban ISDs
started in that direction in the late '70s - and ten years ago, some were
starting school as early as August 10 or so. This year, most of the
Houston-area districts will start the same day: a week from Monday (the
27th), but they won't end until the first week of June. (I'm thankful to be
old enough to have gotten through seven years of HISD while it was still
nominally in the education business, which is definitely isn't these days,
given the number of schools that have been rated deficient by the TEA in
Austin.)

No kidding...it's *cold* down there! (That was an ideal job dream of mine,
when I was younger: April through September in Australia, the rest of the
year up on this side of the 30th...)

It must be, the 'back to school' section in our local
supermarket is up and running.
We will know the school holiday is over when they replace
it with Festive Season stuff and they start showing Pagan trees,
Yule logs and greetings cards with pictures of Robins and
men from northern Norway with redcoats and caps on.

What _does_ Santa wear down under? Fishnet? I should think the
fur-lined garb he has here might be a bit warmish.

Nah. Fishnet 'down under' might get entangled with his pubic hairs.
There's also a danger of 'fall out' if the weave is too course.
