From The Economist print edition
WHEN Charles Goodyear stumbled upon the process that keeps rubber from
melting in the summer—so paving the way for the tyre—it wasn't because
he knew what he was doing. It was just that he was obsessed with
rubber.
Motivated rather than discouraged, it seems, by serial failures with
rubber, Goodyear tried every trick of kitchen-chemistry to solve the
problem. He even mixed apple juice with the stuff, in attempts to keep
it from melting. In the end, negligence gave him another chance. In
his brother's kitchen, Goodyear left a piece of rubber on the stove.
The heat singed the outside surface, leaving a protective layer that
kept the rubber from melting. Realising that his problem was now
solved, Goodyear is credited with inventing vulcanised rubber.
