Cross Posting |
Jabriol recently informed me that the talk.origins ng is set up to accept
only posts with no more than two groups in the newsgroups list. Is it
possible to set up alt.atheism this way? Lately the signal-to-noise ratio is
approaching zero. Eliminating most cross-posters would help a lot.

If you're using Xnews, copy this into your score file. Things are a
whole lot cleaner now.
Finally figured out how to get that working in Pan (Linux). Nice
watching all those "LIBRULS ARE" messages and threads just up and
vanish...
This is where pan's annoying me. Killfile a troll & each thread turns
into multiple threads, one for each response.
It doesn't let you score on the Newsgroups header. Having a score for
each troll subject is going to get slow pretty quickly.
I started with usenet in a line mode on a Unox time sharing system.
Probably the most basic newsreader called rn. Which would let you
killfile on a string anywhere in the text, not just in specific headers.
There's nothing like that in the windows world.
MacAfee spamkiller does that for email.
Has anybody worked out how to do this for usenet news?
It could be done. I thought about doing it. Using Bayesian filtering could
make things interesting. You could rank messages as "this interests me"
and "this doesn't interest me" (with maybe degrees like "wow, I like this
stuff!" etc. <g>). As the filtering learned your preferences, it wouldn't
just quash posts you don't care to see but would *find ones you might be
interested in.
The Bayesian stuff isn't perfect but I've seen it in action in
Spamassassin (doing spam filtering) and it does a good job. You'd have to
train it but after a while, it'd at least be a nice, initial sorting of
the flood on the ng...

After adding all those, I did a catch-up and purge, then reload headers
special. Nice and clean.
