Sarin attack cult guru sentenced to death
A former Japanese doomsday cult guru accused of ordering a 1995 gas attack
on Tokyo subway trains has been sentenced to death.
Shoko Asahara, 48, was found guilty of all 13 charges, including those in
connection with the sarin gas attack that killed 12 people and injured
thousands.
But defence lawyers for Asahara are expected to appeal against the verdict
all the way to the Supreme Court, starting another lengthy legal process
that could take another decade.
Asahra, whose real name is Chizuo Matsumoto, is the former leader of Aum
Shinri Kyo (Supreme Truth Sect).
The sect combined supernatural forecasts of a coming apocalypse - it
predicted the United States would attack Japan and turn it into a nuclear
wasteland - with a frightening ability to produce high-tech modes of mass
destruction.
The sight of bodies lying across platforms and soldiers in gas masks sealing
off Tokyo subway stations stunned the Japanese public, which is long
accustomed to crime-free streets.
It also raised concern worldwide about the ease of making weapons of mass
destruction.
Meanwhile, security has been heightened on Tokyo's subway system.
The police are worried about how the remaining cult members will react to
the verdict.
Four hundred extra police are patrolling the city and security has been
tightened around subway stations.

Not very well though. I would think you could kill more than 12
people on a Tokyo subway with a pipe bomb. Interesting that so many
people would survive exposure to Sarin. I wonder how well they have
recovered.
Even more interesting (and seldom commented upon) is that Aum Shinri
Kyo is an offshoot of Buddhism. When one thinks of fanatical
religious terrorists, Buddhism is not the first religion to come to
mind. What's next? Quaker suicide Bombers? Amish driving buggies
into a sky scrapers?
