Object: Cultural Automatic Behavior
Years ago, I read an article about some culture, possibly Asian or
Indonesian, where the women had a strange reaction to being startled,
they would engine in swearing fits, almost like Tourettes syndrome.
This was clearly a culturally derived behavior and a good analog to
other behaviors such as speaking in tongues, demonstrating the
naturalness of it all. I'd like to dig up this old article or at
information about this culture, but I don't remember any solid details
that will allow me to Google. Does my description sound familiar to
anyone?

Nope, but I do have a tendancy to swear at my husband whenever he sneaks up
on me and scares the bejesus out of me.

Sounds like the female version of IMS (Irritable Male Syndrome).

It brings up a vague memory of a discussion of culturally dependent
psychosis. That is, that there seems to be forms of insanity that are
only found in particular cultures. I don't remember what magazine this
was in.
