Mom Arrested After Child Dies in Dirty Motel
Tuesday, December 14, 2004
ORLANDO, Fla. A woman was arrested on child abuse charges Tuesday
after her 3-year-old daughter was found dead in a filthy motel room
where they lived with the woman's husband and five other children,
authorities said.
The two adults were already serving four years probation because he
used a belt to beat at least two children, including the girl who
died, officials said.
Deputies found dirty diapers and trash littering the room at the
extended-stay motel, and baby bottles containing moldy milk and what
could have been maggots, said Orange County sheriff's spokeswoman
Barbara Miller.
Kenya Hill, 27, called 911 Monday and an emergency operator tried to
give her CPR instructions for little Kai Gadison, but Hill told the
operator it was too late, Miller said.
"She said, 'Oh, no, the baby's cold. I think she's dead' and started
crying," Miller said.
Kai, whose body was found on a bed, may have been dead for a day or
two, authorities said. The Orange-Osceola medical examiner was
performing an autopsy.
Nathan Gadison, the father of five of Hill's six children, served
nearly six months in jail after pleading no contest in 2002 to charges
of aggravated child abuse and child abuse, plus another nine months
for a probation violation, state attorney's office spokesman Randy
Means said.
Hill pleaded no contest to two counts each of child neglect and
failure to treat and report abuse. Means did not immediately know if
she served any time.
According to motel records, the family checked into the motel on Aug.
9.
As part of his sentence, Gadison was to have only supervised visits
with his children, participate in child-raising classes and take
medication for his mental illnesses. There was no immediate indication
if the court order had been lifted and Gadison had been given
permission to again live with his family.
Officials of the state Department of Children & Families said Tuesday
they could not comment on the case. The agency has been under scrutiny
since the disappearance of Rilya Wilson (search), a foster child who
was in the state-approved care of a woman with a lengthy criminal
record.
Hill and the five other children — three girls and two boys, all under
the age of 5 were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center (search).
Miller said Hill complained of stomach pains and investigators found
bruising on some of the children.
Hill was charged early Tuesday with domestic related child abuse and
was being held without bail.
Neighbors said Gadison was in Tampa buying supplies for his tattoo
business. Investigators had not yet spoken to him, Miller said.

The Child Protective Agency in California, at least, is feared by parents
like this because hey are afraid the agency will takes their kids away.
Those of us who have worked with CPA know they are very, very understaffed
and are mandated to work with the idea that the best place for the kids is
with the parents...
It has to be something *really* horrible for the kids to be removed and even
worse for it to be permanent. Unless the parents beat the dead child to
death the chances are very good that the children will be back with their
parents within a year, if that long.

You talking about the CPA in CALIFORNIA???
If so, you are, well....the CPA in California is feared by parents, period.
I had a run in with them when my children were small. Oh, no, there was no
abuse. My house was clean. My kids were well taken care of...but my seven
year old son decided that he hated baths and showers and wouldn't take one
ever again in his life. I tried everything short of hiring Bigfoot to hold
him under the faucet, and then I gave up; I talked to his teachers and the
principal of his school and told them my plan; I would let Adam have his
way. I would let him wear his clothes as he wished, and not make him shower,
and see what happened. I figured that if all his teachers knew what I was
doing and why, there would be no problem; peer pressure would soon have the
kid in the bathtub.
I was right. It didn't take very long at all for his classmates to let him
know that his state of, er, natural dirt was not pleasing to them. He came
home after two weeks of this, buried his clothes and took a very, very long
bath. He has never skipped a bath or shower since. No abuse, no hitting,
good result, right?
Not right. One of the teachers decided it was taking too long and called
Child Welfare, and I went through six months of pure hell with them...at the
end of which I was invited to teach parenting classes for them, including
using the incident with Adam as an example of the RIGHT way to handle
something.
They spent far more time with me and my family over a stubborn seven year
old than they needed to, and from what I can see, they spend far LESS time
with people like that woman in Florida than they need to. Yes, they are
understaffed and over worked. But do not tell me that the mandate is to
leave the kids in the home, because it's not.

their parents within a year, if that long.
I think that in this case, the parents will be in jail, where they should
be. This is NOT a stubborn kid with a sudden aversion to water.

If you in fact went through what you claim and are not aware of the mandate,
you didn't learn much.
But the inability to control a seven year old who does not have mental
disorders speaks for itself.

The point was, you *****, I WAS able to control a seven year old. He learned a
valuable lesson, nobody got spanked, nobody was abused, and everything
turned out quite well. So, by the way, did he. So have all my kids.
None of 'em are on drugs, none of 'em are in jail, none of 'em drink or
smoke and they all get along well with others...and are persuing their
dreams with confidence, every one of 'em.
And no, that 'mandate' is not there. From where I sat, twenty years ago, the
"mandate" was to get the kids out of the home and THEN see if the state
thought that the parents were good enough to have 'em back, and quite
frankly, getting the kids back was not easy. The system was uncaring,
unresponsive and incredibly hide bound. The rules were far more important
than the kids.
If things have changed since then, great. But you would have to prove that
to me.
