Dancing with the enemy

From The Economist print edition
For all the hostility between Taiwan and mainland China, their
respective economies are now deeply interdependent, says James Miles
(interviewed here). That should help to keep the peace
"GIVE back our rivers and mountains," says a slogan inside a
military base on the tip of Kinmen (also known as Quemoy), a tiny
island controlled by Taiwan but shrouded by the same polluted haze that
envelops Xiamen, a port city on the communist-controlled Chinese
mainland. A soldier on guard says giant loudspeakers inside the base
still broadcast music across the 2km (1.2 mile) stretch of water to
Xiamen.

I think the reality of the situation is that over the next few decades
there will be a de facto reunification as the economies,
communications, and transportation of the two sides become more linked.
It's just a question of whether this reunification is of the gradual
and peaceful sort or the immediate and violent. This gradual
reuinfication may become one day more realistic and acceptable to the
people on Taiwan if political change follows economic development on
the Mainland.
I think the more China harrasses Taiwan and the more that it tries to
isolate it internationally, the more they fuel the independence
movement there. Instead of maintaining the political fantasy that
Taiwan doesn't exist and is already ruled by the Mainland, they should
recognize for reunification to eventually happen politically, China has
to recognize that a separate and sovereign political entity exists on
Taiwan and to negotiate in good faith with this sovereign entity as an
equal rather than trying to strong arm it. They should take West and
East Germany as an example or North and South Korea, in terms of
recognizing the political reality that two separate states exist and
need to work together to eventually reunify and maintain peace. I
think if that happens, both China and Taiwan could benefit tremendously
and work towards some form of eventual reintegration.
