Danish cartoons are a bit lame |
I don't think those cartoons published in those Danish newspapers are
particularly offensive. I was quite disappointed when I found them on
the net (http://www.michellemalkin.com/archives/004413.htm) and cannot
see what all the fuss is about.
I notched this up in 10 minutes and I'm sure both Christians and
Muslims would find it much more offensive. Do you think any Danish
newspapers will print it?

Apparently ANY cartoon depicting ANY subject related to Islam will "provoke"
muslims. I mean, after Israel/Afghanistan/Iraq they profoundly hate "the
West" anyway.

"Isn't 'evil religion' just a little bit redundant?"
Inasmuch as the twentieth century saw scores of millions killed at the
hands of secular regimes that believed they were implementing various
utopias lent certain success by the achievements of modernity alone,
no, I don't think "evil religion" is any more redundant than merely
"evil humanity."
I have little but contempt for Hamas, for example, but they've done
more for Palestinian welfare from the standpoint of social structure
than the entire PA has done in more than 20 years. Many involved
Palestinians are religiously motivated. Their brethren are religiously
motivated to do definite evils.
This is equally true of secularists. Some are motivated to do good,
others to do evil. Most, to do both.
Calling any one thing good or evil, or scapegoating religion after what
the world experienced during the 20th century, is absurd. One needn't
dismiss Islam itself as evil (even if one thinks it bogus) to judge
many acts committed in its name to be, yes, evil.
The moment you try tracing evil to one particular cause, if you're
honest you'll find that evil is fairly universal.

It may be that Islam is essentially violent. I won't pretend to
expertise on the question. But it's true that many Muslims are not
violent. Whether this is because they reject violence in their
tradition, deny it, or just don't find it, I don't know.
I just think generalizations about "religion" and evil are idiotic in
the wake of the last century. When we get down to individual cases, and
specific human instances of belief in action (be they "orthodox"
beliefs of a faith or fringe interpretations of wackos), there's plenty
of room for condemnation or congratulations, variously.

So, by your logic, we should not generalize about genocidal maniacs
being "bad", as some of them have done a few good deeds?

:::sigh:::
James generalized not about the subset of Muslims who happen to be
genocidal maniacs, He spoke of "the part where he excuses Islam for its
inherent violence." He was generalizing about Islam, not maniacs (not
all Muslims are maniacs). Now you're talking as if I'm objecting to
generalizing about the subset of Muslims who are genocidal maniacs. I
have no idea how you can intuit or infer that from the foregoing. :-/
"By my logic," we're not generalizing without warrant to a class when
we narrow the class from "Muslim" to "genocidal maniacs." We're merely
being descriptive.

All religion can said to be based somewhat on hatred. In my experience, most
people generally are good people in spite of religion. Why should one
religion be considered more "evil" than another?

Xianity is a religion of hatred too. They just lie about it. But look
at whether xians really love their enemies. They don't love their muslim
enemies. They hate them. How many xians "love" bin laden, like Jebus
commanded? All religions hate those who disagree with them and only
"love" those who do what they agree with.
it is a evil relgion.
Islam is a bit more overt about its blood-thirsty impulses, but just
about all religions, including the crusading xian and genocidal jewish
religion have these features.

obvious point. Xians are COMMANDED by JESUS to "love their enemies".

Actually, they are humanistic standards that have zero to do with any
kind of god. Jesus clearly just ripped off fortune cookie nostrums which
other rabbis had been teaching for decades and centuries earlier.

It's questionable that one could find a single, significantly original

Atheists can be nice to people, show mercy, try to make peace with our
former enemies, etc. There is nothing religious or even profound about
this. Much of it is common sense. You try to patch things up with your
enemies instead of constantly fighting some bloody feud forever.
