Object: Darwin Awards
Does anyone around here have a copy of the first or second Darwin
Awards books by Wendy Northcutt?
I noticed that the Cretin Coalition nominated the Mistaken Rapture
for a Darwin award, and wondered if it was in either of the books.
http://www.cretinworld.com/second_page.html
A couple other of my stories were nominated as well, and I was curious
if any of 'em are mentioned in either book, but I'm too cheap to buy
'em to find out.

Elroy wrote the rapture story. That's why he would know it's a fake.
However the Darwin Awards aren't all that particular about adding urban
legends to their records. One story they included a few years ago was an
urban legend that's been going around in various forms for over 100 years.

If the Darwin Awards lists never used hoaxes, they wouldn't specify
which stories are true and which were hoaxes and/or urban legends.
They do, so they must. :-) And Elroy would know it's a hoax because
he's the hoaxer. :-)

I wasn't sure how much research goes into making sure each story
is really true.
For example:

I made that one up too, and wonder if it made it to the first book or
was tossed out as a fake.

This was included in the second book, on page 49 of the papaerback(UK Edition).
Now all you have to do is prove you made it up to get the royalties. :-)

It turnes out that I have the first one, and "Mistake Rapture" was not in
it. It did have one well known urban legend: that car crash with the
JATO unit strapped on. After the account is a paragraph exlaining that
this was discovered to be an urban legend after it was given a Darwin
Award.
FWIW, you can look at the Table of Contents of most books online at
Amazon.com. Generally, I prefer Barnes & Noble, but their web site has an
annoying pop-up on the front page, so I use Amazon instead.
