Darwin Day was awesome! |
I mentioned a while back that I was helping to put together a Darwin Day
celebration locally. Here's a little description, as promised, of what
happened. We got a reasonable number of people -- about 30 -- which
wasn't too bad given the terrible weather and the short time frame we had
to set things up. Despite some initial audio-visuals problems we showed
several interesting tapes. We first showed "Evolution", which is a
dramatic reinactment shown on PBS that portrays the life and times of
Charles Darwin. We also showed snips of tapes by Richard Dawkins titled,
_Is Evolution Progressive_ and _The Selfish Meme_. All tapes were
excellent.
We also had several interesting speakers who talked about things ranging
from the basic mechanics of evolution to the history of the subject and
the application of the scientific method. In addition, we had birthday
cake with "Happy Birthday Darwin" written on it and three numeric candles
indicating that it was his 195th birthday. There's going to be one more
belated celebration tomorrow, where we'll talk about some of the evolving
bunk known as intelligent design creationism and I'm looking forward to
that.
Anyway, thanks to everyone here for your suggestions for things to make
the event better. We're looking forward to an even better celebration
next year, culminating in the 200th birthday celebration in 2009.

Glad to hear that it went off well.
