My Congregation's Evolutionary Debate
By Henry G. Brinton
Sunday, September 18, 2005; Page B01
Most adult Sunday school classes don't raise eyebrows, but my church is
planning to hold one that's sure to. It's called "Evolution for
Christians," and it will be taught this winter by David Bush, a member
of the church I lead, Fairfax Presbyterian. David is an articulate
government retiree who has been interested in this topic for nearly two
decades, teaches a class on theories of the origins of life every five
years or so, and once again has really done his homework. His view is
that science and religion answer two different sets of questions about
creation, with science answering the "how" questions, and religion
answering the "why" ones. "With a little bit of wisdom and tolerance on
each side," he tells me, "I think they can complement rather than
contradict each other."

Whatever he might think, it's still not "each side" of anything. And
it is dishonest of theists to pretend it is. Their religion only
applies to them. If they want to rationalise reality to fit, it is up
to them but nobody else is under any obligation even to bother with
anything they might say.
There is no compromise between reality and fantasy. If they want
everybody else to change their understanding of reality, they have to
use reality itself to do that.

I like it when Darwin goes to classes.

Yet Hitler repeated denied that he was an atheist, and even (an odd move if
he were intent of publically instituting atheism) publically denounced it.
Under his rule, school text books waxed lyrical about natural selection as a
means for preventing the degeneration of species, yet barely mentioned it as
a method of changing species into other species.

Stalin encounters the T0E in seminary: A Victory for Atheism

This would be the Stalin who championed Lysenko, that rabid anti-Darwinist
and persecutor of Darwinian biologists. I cannot help but note that, at
least, Stalin's enounter hardly seems to have been a victory for the theory
of evolution itself.
