Darwin set sail today! |
While looking something up on Wikipedia, I saw that on this day, in 1831,
the HMS Beagle left Plymouth, England, with Charles Darwin on board, on
the voyage that would eventually take him to the Galapagos Islands, and
give him the data he would later use to formulate his theory of natural
selection. Yeah, Darwin!

And the Navigator had been home schooled . . . .
Then they ran out of food and started eating finches.
Finch fillets, Finch eggs, Finch fritters, fried Finch...
All that was left was their beaks and thousands of feathers
they used to stuff their matresses.
One of Darwin's least known books is:
1001 Finch recipes
Trying to figure out what to do with the left over beaks
he noticed differences between them and started drawing
them. The rest is history.

I read Origin of the Species, a very old red leather-bound edition,
when I was in grade 11. He reminded be a bit of a someone uncovering
evidence in 9/11 that the official story could not possibly be true.
He wanted to be so careful and present it in as inoffensive a way as
possible, in tiny dribbles letting the reader make the conclusions
before he did. He was afraid and embarrassed to have to point out this
unpleasant truth.
I later learned he had terrible stomach troubles, from living in
constant fear of the Christians.
It seems so wrong that such a kind and brilliant man should have had
to put up with such crap from ignorant Christians.
I went against the Christians on the matter of homosexuality, calling
for equality, back in 1969. I got over 300,000 abusive phone calls
and over 3,000 death threats. I suspect Darwin got his share of abuse
too, but without the telephone, more would have come in the form of
letters and personal visits.

Nineteenth century England wasn't as bad as 21st Century USA.
Evolution wasn't controversial among the educated, and had been known
about for generations. Darwin's was just the first scientifically
derived explanation, displacing earlier theories like Lamark's.
Darwin's grandfather Erasmus was an evolutionist - when the word meant
something.
Victorian England was very scientifically oriented - that was what had
given the country its prosperity.
Apart from conservatives, men and boys had scientific interests,
hobbies etc (including engineering). Even the poor working class
collected plants, leaves, butterflies, etc. And they catalogued the,
learning what they could.
Women and girls were educated differently, and were more religious.
Darwin didn't want to upset his wife.
What caused an outcry was his publication of The Descent of Man - when
he was attacked by high up church men. But the scientifically oriented
accepted it.
It seems so wrong that such a kind and brilliant man should have had

That may be true, but I think the point remains that Darwin put off
publishing TOOS for a long time because he knew it would cause a stir and
that he would be pilloried by the Church. If not for Wallace, you better
believe he was going to have it published posthumously.
As far as his ailments go, there are many hypotheses, the stress from all
this being one. Another was that he contracted a disease or somesuch on his
trip.

This is certainly a myth.
The most likely explanation is that he caught Chagas disease whilst in
South America.
