Survival of the fittest?
Right now, as I'm typing this, I've got some idiotic woodpecker outside my
bedroom window banging it's brains out on my air conditioner. If Darwin is
right how could this sort of idiotic behavior not have been bred out of
this bird? How did this species not go the way of some of the other
Brainiacs of the Animal Kingdom like Triceratops, dodos and unicorns? I
thought natural selection took care of this sort of stuff. That's why we
have woodpeckers but we don't have rockpeckers, mountainlionpeckers or
peckerpeckers anymore.

kingdom it'd have to be the crane fly / daddy-longlegs. A creature which

Obviously I wasn't seriously suggesting that they *were* a disproof of
Darwin. But it's still a mystery to me how they survive long enough to
reproduce. Not that I've ever done even a second's study into the lifetime
of the crane fly. But they just *seem* so useless - and surely they're
extraordinarily easy prey for even the dimmest bird (my cats like them too).
An animal that exists only to be lunch...
Another example of strangely poor adaptations is the goldfish: 'Hmm, that
looks tasty, I'm going to eat it. Hmm, that looks tasty, I'm going to eat

goldfish have been bred for thousands of years already. Thousands of
years ago, goldfish were probably like any other fish, but humans
started breeding them for other purposes, and thus they developed
features which were not suitable for their survival. Like for
example, chickens are probably even worse than goldfish, and they
would die almost immediately if they were released. That is because
humand bred chickens for their needs - to be fat and unable to fly.

very long, which might explain why fundies are so intent on trying to
suppress it in our schools.
