Daughter Defends Atheist Father |
Please overlook my natural tendency to be a boastful parent. But my daughter
has posted her first video on YouTube, in which she defends me from charges
of being an unfit parent after I posted the now-infamous Bible-Dog-*****
video.

Mr. Mills, I recently bought your book "Atheist Universe". I haven't yet
got around to reading it, but from skimming it several times it looks very
good. I am looking forward to it.
However, I must say that a Google Groups search on your e-mail address
(above) is quite shocking. There are countless threads in which you
shamelessly promote your book, and I even found a post that links to nude
pictures of you and your wife!
My point is that your Internet activity paints you in a negative light, and
probably hurts your credibility as an author. If I had seen all this
before ordering your book from Amazon, I doubt that I would have gone
through with it.
Just a little feedback.

I greatly appreciate your thoughtful message and generous compliments. And I
am certainly grateful to you for buying the book. I hope you'll write to me
personally with your impressions after you've finished it.
As far as book promotion goes, I pretty much agree with you. Like it or
not -- and I don't like it -- book sales (whether mine or others) will quite
literally be zero unless someone goes out and stirs up some kind of interest
or activity to let people know the book exists. There are now over 4 million
titles on Amazon. Chances are good that you would never have found my book
on Amazon were if not for my previous "antics" that moved the title higher
on the Amazon Search Lists.
Big time writers can hire expensive publicists or buy full-page ads in The
New York Times. I don't have the resources. I wish I did. Honestly, I do
feel uncomfortable posting messages here and there about the book or my
webpage. I do try, however, to give people something rather than just
spewing out spam. For example, if you go to my website, you can download the
entire CD audiobook of Atheist Universe for free. You can download about 7
or 8 radio interviews for free and work crossword puzzles and hear some
popular comedy files. There is an entire chapter excerpt from Atheist
Universe to download as well. Believe it or not, the most popular file on my
entire website is my impersonation of Beavis. Second is my impersonation of
Sylvester the Cat. The book excerpt comes in third! This is reality.
As far as the dog-poop goes, people routinely use their daily newspapers for
this purpose. I believe that some of the criticism of the video results from
a residual and undeserved respect for the Bible that even some atheists
retain from their childhoods.

I think the true significance is that you weren't struck dead by,
say,
a lightning bolt or your house collapsing in flames ala Carrie.

Boy that's childish and deliberately offensive!
Not exactly a "rational response" in my humble opinion.

Granted, a little over the top. Would it have been as bad if it had been a
copy of the novelization of Star Wars?
Both constitute an insult to fictional characters.

Ok - good question.
Both constitute an insult to fictional characters.
I am, of course, not concerened with hurting God or Obi Wan Kenobi -
but i could cause genuine distress to a christian (or a Star Wars
fan ?).
Now a part of me says "That's their problem" - but another part of me
says "you dont hurt peole (however trivially ) just for fun".
In this case although i believe the bible is a load of nonsense the
attachment/repect of the believer is *real* and so the offense will be
actual and deliberate.
If I offend someone for just "being me" and not believing - well
that's just too bad - I am not going to pretend.
However if I set out to offend then that for me crosses a line.
I guess I was brought up to be polite.
You Texans are brought up to be polite aint ya?
8-)
Cheers, Mark.

What an unbelievable ***** storm about a silly stunt. FFS! Move on!
There's nothing to see, apart from that there are enough atheists in
America to have a big argument with each other, which I suppose is
encouraging.
