Dave Silverman on Scarborough Country Right Now |
is showing a bunch of Christians for the oportunists they
are. The first thing Dave Silverman of American Atheists did
was thank the host for having him on the show. The second
thing he did was ask people to send money to help the
Tsunami victims because that is the kind of thing secular
humanists do. The Christians barely mentioned the victims.
They were too busy trying to prove that they worshipped a
'god of love'. The one Jewish guy (a rabbi) insisted that people
had a right to be angry with their god and to ask questions
when bad things happen. The Christians couldn't accept this.
They were too busy hawking their Bible and its horrible 'God'.
(I think this is what Silverman meant when he said they were
using this opportunity to hawk their book, not that they were
trying to hawk books they'd written themselves.) Tim LaHaye
surprised me when he said that the tsunami was a natural
disaster, but kept harping on people being ready for the end
of the world. He didn't use those words, but it was obvious
what he meant. Billy Graham's daughter has a permanant
phony smile that really bugged me after awhile. She was
the worst of them all, as far as I'm concerned. She did
nothing but proselytize. Disgusting woman. David wasn't
given a chance to make a final statement. Neither was
the rabbi.

I am beginning to suspect that Mr. Scarborough is a closet atheist.
He brings fundamentalist religious folks and one atheist together for
discussion, quite often, and the religious folks scream and argue and
look like insane people and the atheist hardly gets a word in
edgewise, but always look more sane than any of the other guests. And
Mr. Scarborough just smiles and lets them snarl and scream and fight
and look like nut jobs.

The show was about God and whether He let the tsunamis happen and whether or
not He existed. It wasn't just about the tsunami victims. This is probably
why everyone didn't mention them and supporting them.

Nope. He said "books." He was (wrongly) referring to their desire to hawk
the books they had written. It was priceless when the host put him in his
place.
He was dead wrong about the rabbi; if he wanted to say that he didn't have a
book to sell. They kept mentioning the title of it under the rabbi's name.
Before the show, they even showed a picture of it.
Maybe Silverman has no book.
Regards,
Jason

Yes, I read the transcript and was really shocked at some of the things
these people were saying - Especially Billy Graham's daughter. Didn't she
say when referring to the victims, "Well, they were going to die anyway"?
And all this "Our god is a god of love and everything points to the cross"
crap. It was like she had this set speech and couldn't deviate from it.

The show was not about whether or not your poxie sky
pixie exists. It was about why an angry god would allow
such a horrible event to happen and cause the deaths of
so many people and how people of various religions or
none at all react to this. The fundy Christians took
advantage of this to push their personal beliefs on everyone.
If the tsunami hadn't killed so many people, do you think
anyone would have cared about such reactions and how
people feel about the idea of an angry god? No matter
what they spoke about, those 155,000 deaths were what
led to the show's existence. And those who didn't speak
about the victims and how to help them at all showed
themselves for the shallow, self-serving fundy bastards
they are.
