Dawkins interview: The atheist |
From the article:
-------------------------------
Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins explains why God is a delusion, religion
is a virus, and America has slipped back into the Dark Ages.
By Gordy Slack
April 28, 2005 | Richard Dawkins is the world's most famous out-of-the-closet
living atheist. He is also the world's most controversial evolutionary
biologist. Publication of his 1976 book, "The Selfish Gene," thrust Dawkins
into the limelight as the handsome, irascible, human face of scientific
reductionism. The book provoked everything from outrage to glee by arguing that
natural selection worked its creative powers only through genes, not species or
individuals. Humans are merely "gene survival machines," he asserted in the
book.

And one has to go through the trouble of getting a Salon
Pass to read this dreck. Well, having gone through that
trouble, there's nothing left to do but to wade through it.
Some people never get over the insecurities of their
childhood - this is unfortunately one example of that.
Of course, there is always an outside chance that, even
given the psychological root of these ideas, they could be
correct. That's one reason to keep reading this tiresome
stuff - waiting for something to show up that might be
meaningful. But all we have here are are more of the same
Dawkinsean meanderings.

Now let me get this straight.
Not only is Prof. Dawkins something of a self-proclaimed
atheist prophet, but apparently *you* believe he had been
able to exert his influence even before he was born. Truly
a remarkable person, if that were actually the case.
I suggest you do a little study of history before you make
such statements. You will find that the world was getting
on quite nicely, thank you, before Dawkins appeared on the
scene.
Of course, if you want to kiss the ring (or some other

If you have anything interesting to say about his IDEAS,
over and above his own ramblings, then I wish you would
state it. Without the hero-worshipping, if you please

In the context of its use, Dawkinsean is synonymous with rational,
scientific and humanistic.
Here are the definitions of these three words:
rational adj.
Having or exercising the ability to reason.
Of sound mind; sane.
reason n.
The capacity for logical, rational, and analytic thought;
intelligence.
To determine or conclude by logical thinking:
-------------------
scientific adj.
Of, relating to, or employing the methodology of science.
science n.
The observation, identification, description, experimental
investigation, and theoretical explanation of phenomena.
Such activities restricted to a class of natural phenomena.
Such activities applied to an object of inquiry or study.
Knowledge, especially that gained through experience
--------------------
humanism n.
A system of thought that centers on humans and their values,
capacities, and worth.
Concern with the interests, needs, and welfare of humans
.....the doctrine that people's duty is to promote human welfare [syn:
humanitarianism] 2: the doctrine emphasizing a person's capacity for
self-realization through reason; rejects religion and the supernatural
---------------------
The statements he makes in the article are quite compatible with the
above concepts.
The concepts above have done far more to promote the health and well
being of humankind than anything else in history, including religion
or religious ideas.

From the article:
-------------------------------
Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins explains why God is a
delusion, religion is a virus, and America has slipped back into
the Dark Ages.
And to all his buddies here, and others such as Stear, Kurtz and
Shermer, this form of rabies is fatal.
The humane thing is that they don't have the capacity to realize
that.
No, Glenn - everyone realizes very well what a rabid pack of
religionists is capable of. That's the point.
Sorry, that's not the point.
Yes, it is, Glenn.
Whining about it won't get you anywhere.
You're the one whining.
This has to be something of a record - you guys have managed to get
from an interesting interview with Prof. Dawkins to a vacuous
playground slanging match within 5 posts.
That is, if you think that an interview with a rabid dog could be "interesting".
A rabid dog whose statements were so scrupulous that not a single
derider has made the slightest attempt to address the veracity of his
statements.

If you can't tell the difference between a human and a dog, I think I
can see why you have problems understanding evolutionary theory.
The fact that you and everyone else who has attacked the interview
apparently have nothing of substance to say speaks volumes. If you
really want to show that your opinion is somehow better than his, why
not try and argue it rationally rather than blustering like this?

What - and lose a chance to foam at the mouth while projecting his problems
on everyone else?
You must not have been following Glenn's posts for any length of time.

Er, nunia, i didnt't quite get the gist of your post, would you mind
coming right out and saying what you think. Or am i assuming too much in
even intimating that you think at all.
The problem is not what people believe, it is what they do as a result
of their belief. Your beliefs apparently mean you can act any way you
like, that means, unless you want to be a complete hypocrite, that you
should allow Glenn the freedom to do likewise. (Not that he needs any
help from me to defend himself).
