Daytona Beach Race Car Driver Rescues Woman From Burning Car
POSTED: 3:33 pm EDT May 12, 2006
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- When a Daytona Beach race car driver saw an
elderly woman inside a burning car, he says he knew she only had seconds
to escape.
Grand Am car racer Steve Sliwa pulled 88-year-old Merry Banks from her
car moments before it exploded.
Banks says she had no idea her car was on fire. She had crashed into a
high-voltage transformer before Sliwa found her and pounded on her
window.
Sliwa was riding his bike when he found her.
With flames shooting several feet above his head, Sliwa persuaded Banks
to unlock her door. He then gently lifted her out of the car.
