DC GOP Councilman Quits GOP |
http://www.365gay.com/newscon04/09/092904catania.htm
Washington, D.C. Councilman David Catania, once the GOP's top
fundraiser in the District, officially quit the Republican party
Wednesday over its continuing attacks on gays.
"Today marks the end of my journey as a Republican," Catania said in a
statement. He is now registered as an independent.
"On a personal note, this decision is extremely painful and difficult.
It will almost certainly lead to a loss of cherished friends within
the Republican Party for whom I have an enormous amount of respect and
gratitude. In spite of this fact, I will no longer rationalize my
association with a political party that has so badly betrayed my
values and principles."

"Cherished friends?" No. Mere acquaintances.
Catania Quits GOP Over Anti-Gay Amendment

(Washington) Washington, D.C. Councilman David Catania, once the GOP's
top fundraiser in the District, officially quit the Republican party
Wednesday over its continuing attacks on gays.
"Today marks the end of my journey as a Republican," Catania said in a
statement. He is now registered as an independent.
"On a personal note, this decision is extremely painful and difficult.
It will almost certainly lead to a loss of cherished friends within
the Republican Party for whom I have an enormous amount of respect and
gratitude. In spite of this fact, I will no longer rationalize my
association with a political party that has so badly betrayed my
values and principles."
The openly gay Catania has publicly voiced his opposition for months
to the proposed constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex
marriage.
As a result of his opposition he was removed in May as a delegate to
the Republican National Convention. He signaled at the time that he
felt no longer welcome in the party and would leave. (story)
The 36 year old joined the GOP when he was 16.
"For some time, the leadership of the Republican Party has been
dominated - and I believe very adversely - by a single, narrow group
of individuals, who show no interest or concern for issues that
confront a diverse nation," Catania said in his statement.
"The time has long since past for me to stop believing that by working
within the Party, I can be an agent of change.
Empty words and rhetoric are all that are left of the once proud
Republican Party and I am no longer willing to associate myself with
it. I shall, therefore, continue my public service as an Independent."
Catania has been a member of the Washington DC Council for 7 years.
The Bush-Cheney campaign had touted Catania on its website as a top
fundraiser under the age of 40, having raised nearly $80,000 for the
president's reelection.
In an interview with the Washington Post Catania said he did not join
the Democratic Party because "I felt like I've been stung by one
party. I'm not eager to join another. But mostly, being an independent
just suits me."
