De-lurk and question |
Really, I want to know. Before that, I'm not sure that I've introduced
myself to the newsgroup--short story, late-twenties female. Who, b/c I've
developed and retained a moral code over the years that includes making
contributions of my time and energy for the well-being of my fellow humans,
have found myself driving two elderly ladies to the church to whom they
belong every Sunday.
Which does not preclude me from then using that time in church to read
the newsgroups on my PDA. (To hilarious effect, b/c I've heard the pastor
there decry internet addiction and obsession with "computer appliances",
even as I scroll and tap and hold, though I'm sure I wasn't necessarily
being singled out for scorn. B/c that would go against everything we know
and love about X-tains.)
At any rate, as I was sitting there in church alongside the two ladies,
flicking the dirt from underneath my fingernails, I heard the pastor refer,
as he has been wont to do of late, to the "Passion"--and he waxed on about
how 39 lashes were scored upon Jesus, representing all 39 of the (did he say
"fatal"?) major areas of disease known to man. And after the ladies were
taken home, I went and I googled, and found this:
http://teenagers.freeyellow.com/page4.html
The page does not adequately answer my question and to read it tortured
me unnecessarily, which doubly pissed me off:
"Scientists have classified every sickness and disease known to man into 39
categories....As Jesus hung there he took on cancer, aids, TB, lung disease,
heart disease, kidney disease, chicken pox, measles, migraine headaches,
ulcers, everything! "
Please tell me, do...What "are" the 39 categories of sickness and
disease known to man? I would ask some friends who are physicians, but
because I heard murmurs of acknowledgment and agreement from all quarters of
the church when the pastor asserted this, I'm guessing these major
categories are popular knowledge that every podunk can count off on their
fingers, with me being some kind of embarrassing exception. B/c otherwise,
it would seem as though parishioners accept as fact everything their pastor
says without using their faculties to discern otherwise, and that would
just, well, spell the end of the world.

Nope it isn't you. All people in the church agreed with the priest because,
or they weren't paying attention, or always agree with the priest on
everything, or they did not want to look stupid for the rest, so they
looked like they agreed, or this stuff have been 'taught' to them on sunday
school. Normal people do not know there are 39 categories.

I think you can compare it with the 7 arts in the middle ages. There are
only, and in total, seven arts (other 'arts' are subsections of the seven).
grammar, rhetoric, dialectic, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, music (<=
typical ones, non-typical ones =>), mechanics, painting, alchemy,
philosophy, theology etc.
Seven is the number for completeness. So if you have seven you have them
all listed. Sadly this does not work for deceases for some weird reason.
Probably some wackjob in ancient greece taught that 39 would have anything
to do with decease. 39 is one less then a whole lot (40)? I've no clue.
To bore you out of your mind, here is a uncomplete list of all '39'
categories:
Cancer, Autoimmune conditions, Diabetes ,Genetic conditions, Chromosome
conditions, Viral infections, Bacterial infections, Parasitic Infections,
Worm conditions, Physical conditions, Prion diseases, Nutritional
deficiencies, Vitamin deficiencies, Mineral deficiencies, Mitochondrial
diseases, Accidents, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Pregnancy Conditions,
reastfeeding Conditions, Birth defects, Male conditions, Female conditions,
nfant conditions, Childhood conditions, Adolescent conditions, Immune
isorders, Balance disorders, Pain, Systemic disorders, Blood conditions,
blood vessel conditions, Nerve conditions, Muscle conditions, Heart
conditions, Back conditions, Neck conditions, Spinal disorders, Eye
conditions, Brain conditions, Mental conditions, Nose conditions, Mouth
conditions, Dental conditions, Foot conditions, Leg conditions, Knee
conditions, Elbow conditions, Finger conditions, Wrist conditions, Shoulder
conditions, Ear conditions, Lung conditions, Liver conditions, Kidney
conditions, Gall bladder conditions, Pancreas conditions, Digestive
conditions, Prostate conditions, Male genital conditions, Obstetrical
conditions, Gynaecological conditions, Thyroid disorders, Hearing disorders
