Deaf to God - Pope warns secular society is losing touch with reality |
The Catholic Church, indeed the entire world, is fortunate to have such a
wise and Holy man serve as pontiff.
http://www.catholic.org/international/international_story.php?id=21204
MUNICH, Germany (Catholic Online) - Pope Benedict XVI returned home this
weekend to his native Germany, warning an increasingly secular society not
to let a misunderstanding of science and reason make it deaf to God.
The pope, in the Sept. 10 Mass, the first public eucharistic celebrations of
the Sept. 9-14 trip to his homeland, told an estimated 250,000 that Western
societies that tolerance and cultural openness to the world must include
"the fear of God."
"We are no longer able to hear God," the pope said. "There are too many
frequencies filling out ears."
Secular societies are experiencing "a 'hardness of hearing' where God is
concerned," Benedict said. "This is something we particularly suffer in our
own time."
"Along with this hardness of hearing or outright deafness where God is
concerned, we naturally lose our ability to speak with him and to him. And
so we end up losing a decisive capacity for perception. We risk losing our
inner senses," the pope said.
"This weakening of our capacity for perception drastically and dangerously
curtails the range of our relationship with reality. The horizon of our life
is disturbingly foreshortened," Benedict stressed.
With the oldest crucifix in the world, dating back to the 9th century,
present at the open-air Mass at the city's fairgrounds here, the pope told
the crowd, in which Vatican and Bavarian flags were being waved, that modern
society, for all of its advantages, does not have all of the answers facing
mankind.
"What is said about God strikes us as pre-scientific, no longer suited to
our age," the pope said.
He noted that while "people in Africa and Asia admire our scientific and
technical prowess," they are "frightened by a form of rationality which
totally excludes God from man's vision."
"They do not see the real threat to their identity in the Christian faith,"
the pontiff added, "but in the contempt for God and the cynicism that
considers mockery of the sacred to be an exercise of freedom and that holds
up utility as the supreme moral criterion for the future of scientific
research."
"This cynicism," the pope pointed out, works against "the kind of tolerance
and cultural openness that the world's peoples are looking for and that all
of us want."
Tolerance of cultural differences does not mean intolerance of God, Benedict
said.
"The tolerance which we urgently need includes the fear of God - respect for
what others hold sacred. This respect for what others hold sacred demands
that we ourselves learn once more the fear of God. This sense of respect can
be reborn in the Western world only if faith in God is reborn, if God
becomes once more present to us and in us."
While praising the work of Western Catholics in supporting the
social-justice activities of the Catholic Church and noting that "social
justice and the gospel are inseparable," the pope expressed concern about
the lack of emphasis on faith itself.
"Clearly some people have the idea that social projects should be urgently
undertaken, while anything dealing with God or even the Catholic faith is of
limited and lesser importance," Pope Benedict said.
"The God of Jesus Christ must be known, believed in and loved, and that
hearts must be converted if progress is to be made on social issues and
reconciliation is to begin, and if - for example - AIDS is to be combated by
realistically facing its deeper causes and the sick are to be given the
loving care they need," the pope said.
The pontiff urged those gathered to pray to God to "be opened," just as the
deaf and mute man was opened by Jesus in the gospel read for the Mass. "Ask
the Lord," the pope said, "to heal our hardness of hearing for God's
presence, activity and word, and to give us sight and hearing."
"The world needs God. We need God, but what God," the pope asked. "We do not
fail to show respect for other religions and cultures, profound respect for
their faith, when we proclaim clearly and uncompromisingly the God who
encounters violence with his own suffering; who in the face of the power of
evil exalts his mercy, in order than evil may be limited and overcome."

Now, if he'd pull his head out and deal with the reality that five-sixths of
humanity has no need to obey the crossdresser in the Vatican...and that other
sixth disagrees with him on quite a few issues.

Secular societies are experiencing "a 'hardness of hearing' ...
For the first time societies can really hear, and without and guidance
fro church.
We risk losing our inner senses.
Nope, it's just him who risks losing his job.

Snorf!!
How very ironic, in light of the Vatican's recent pronouncement that
Harry Potter stories can lead to Satanism.
