Dean asks ESPN to punt Rush |
"ESPN Should Punt Rush Limbaugh
http://tinyurl.com/pegf
Rush Limbaugh's comments this past week on why African American
quarterbacks are succeeding in the NFL is repugnant and based on a
skewed view of reality. In Rush Limbaugh's world, quarterbacks that
are among the top in statistical ratings, that lead their teams to
the brink of the Super Bowl and are repeatedly voted among the best
players in the league are a creation of some media conspiracy.
Wake up, Rush. African American quarterbacks have worked as hard as
any other quarterback to achieve their position. Their success is due
to the same reasons as any player is successful in the league -- they
have worked tirelessly to perfect their game. Their accolades are due
to their success on the field, not because the league or the media
created them.
ESPN knew what they were getting when they hired Limbaugh, who has
shown intolerance for diversity in the past. According to FAIR
(Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting), Limbaugh once told an African
American caller into his radio show, "take that bone out of your nose
and call me back." He also said, "Have you ever noticed how all
composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?"
While freedom of speech protects the right of people to say horribly
offensive statements like this, there is no law requiring that
networks like ESPN give them a venue to spew this ugly venom of
bigotry.
Rush Limbaugh should have never been hired in the first place by
ESPN. But now that he has proven that he will not leave his bigoted
views outside the studio, his contract should be immediately
terminated. I will begin an online petition to ESPN demanding that
he be dismissed.
Rush Limbaugh's racist views are a sad remnant of a bigoted past that
still lives today in the far right wing of the Republican Party.
There is no place in legitmate American dialogue for the racist views
along the likes of Rush Limbaugh."

It's even funnier how conservatives consider it "free speech" when Rush
talks but "political correctness" when other people take him to task for
what he said.
I heard lots of people characterizing Limbaugh's remarks as "stupid,
ill-advised, bigoted" and so on. I heard absolutely no-one demanding
that "he be silenced."
Rush had a perfect right to say what he said (idiotic though it may have
been), and those who are criticising what he said have a perfect right
to do that as well. That's the epitome of free speech. Maybe if Rush had
been willing to stay on ESPN (he did resign, after all - he wasn't fired
or forced out), we could have had a serious dialogue on some of the
underlying issues suggested by his comments. However, Rush was true to
form and, when called on it, preferred to retreat back to the confines
of his radio show where he controls the microphone and always gets the
last word.
In addition to being a gasbag, the man is gutless.

Nope. However pointing at a person of color in government and saying that
they have been overrated by the media because they're black would be.
Or was it racist to say the media overrates a black QB?
Bingo.
Isn't that an attack on the media?
It's an attack on the QB. It's saying that he wouldn't be quarterback if he
weren't black. It's saying that the man didn't get where he is (and is

No he didn't.
Many sportswriters have claimed that McNabb is overrated.
Limbaugh offered his opinion as to why.
By claiming he wasn't as deserving as credit as a white quarterback
who actually had lower ratings.

very easy to govern. It demands no social reforms. It does not haggle
over expenditures on armaments and military equipment. It pays

for the syndicates of financiers and manufacturers for whom patriotic
terrors are an abundant source of gain.'

Funny how Liberasl get to say whatever tha6y want whenever they
want and scream " Free Speech " priviliges.
But when sopmeone like Rush says something they demand he be
silenced. Typical Hypocritical liberals that keep losing
electiopns.
Rush is free to say what he wants. We're free to criticize him for
it. Rush doesn't have a right to be on TV. No one does.
Now, before someone brings up the Dixie Chicks, I'd rather be on the
side of criticizing a racist than be one of you people who boycotted
the Chicks because they dared criticize the president. You do see the
difference, don't you? Criticizing hte president vs. being a racist.
Except what Rush said was not racist.

No, not strictly -- I agree. He was commenting on
his perceived bias in the media towards black QBs.
He said he thought the media had a "social issue,"
in that they wanted to portray a black QB as a
success. His perceptions were wrong (as they so
often are), as Steve McNair's lack of coverage runs
counter to Rush's view that the media wants to
"play up" the contributions of black QBs. That said,
I think Donovan McNabb has done a decent job,
regardless of what his detractors say -- and he has
some outside of Rush Limbaugh (who is, btw, a big
fat idiot).
I wasn't calling for Rush's dismissal, but let's face
it: as distorted as Rush's perceptions are on any
number of topics, it was only a matter of time before
he got canned at ESPN anyway. He doesn't belong
there anymore than Dennis Miller belonged on ABC's
Monday Night Football program (although I personally
quite enjoyed his commentary there... prior to his soul
transplant surgery, heh).

McNair quarterbacks in the meda backwaters of Tennesse. Don't
underestimate that effect on the coverage he receives from the east
coast.

Then do sports reporters have any business talking about politics?
