Death penalty in UK |

I give in... it’s time to bring back the death penalty

Electric chair
For a long time I was fiercely opposed to the death
penalty in this country. I have changed my mind. And
not simply as a knee-jerk reaction to the recent cold
blooded killing of a policewoman on the streets of
Bradford. Even before that merciless execution of an
officer who had been called to reports of a robbery,
my thoughts on the issue of the death penalty had
altered.
It would be interesting to see how the public might vote
if they were given a free hand to decide the death penalty
issue.
I suspect that the majority would say they've have had enough and consider that we
must bring it back in certain circumstances.
No-one can say whether Ian Huntley might have had second thoughts before killing
those two young girls he lured into his home if the death penalty had been a possible
sanction.
But ultimately it is the only option that could possibly act as a deterrent.
After all, sentencing nowadays means very little. Life as pronounced by a judge
probably means a few years inside, most likely the latter part of the sentence spent
in one of our more luxurious open prisons.
Locking up some of our most repugnant offenders merely continues the agony for those
close to the cases.
I wonder how the parents of Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells feel when they constantly
read stories in the newspapers which keep giving Huntley the oxygen of attention and
publicity that he so manifestly craves?
Eventually it's a certainty that some crazy, hand wringing liberal will turn up to
say that this or that killer has now turned to God and is a reformed character who
should be let out.
Surely, with the benefits of modern science and technology, there is less likely to
be the possibility of a forensic error leading to an incorrect conviction.
I don't advocate the death penalty for all offenders.
But once a jury has decided on a killer's guilt, there needs to be another court or
panel put in place to determine the tariff.
The death penalty should be a rarely used option. But it should be there because
there are some killings so gruesomely appalling and shocking that it is the only
meaningful punishment.

"The army that will defeat terrorism doesn't wear uniforms, or drive
Humvees, or calls in air-strikes. It doesn't have a high command, or
high security, or a high budget. The army that can defeat terrorism
does battle quietly, clearing minefields and vaccinating children. It
undermines military dictatorships and military lobbyists. It subverts
sweatshops and special interests.Where people feel powerless, it
helps them organize for change, and where people are powerful, it
reminds them of their responsibility." ~~~~ Author Unknown ~~~~
