Decoded DNA would 'reach to Moon' |
Decoded DNA would 'reach to Moon'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3237383.stm
Pioneering scientists in the UK have decoded a record-breaking two
billion letters of DNA, it has been revealed.
The researchers at the Wellcome Trust's Sanger Institute say that if
this DNA was scaled up to the size of a spiral staircase it would
stretch to the Moon.

I don't know if it's record breaking or not, didn't the human genome get
decoded and it came out to be 3 billion letters.

It's not finished yet. Nowhere near.
Anyone know how much they've done in the heterochromatic regions?

To clarify, the article in the link points out that a lab in
the UK has been responsible for decoding some 2 billion
bases in various genomes, both human and non-human. They're
responsible for 900-odd million human ones, and the rest are
things like mice and microbes. The article also mentions
that the total human genome is something like 2.9 billion
bases ("letters" if you will). So, this particular lab has
contributed a large share to the human genome effort, but
that's not what the 2 billion figure is about.
BTW, depending on whether the moon is at apogee or perigee,
a spiral staircase with 6-inch risers would require between
about 2.4 and 2.6 billion steps to reach the moon.
