I made a comment about Watergate at work yesterday and was met with a
number of blank stares. Then I realized that likely half of the people
in my company hadn't even been born when it happened. I'm starting to
feel old.

Well I was only two years old and I know about it! I think it's more wilful
ignorance than anything else. As the saying goes....those that don't know

The problem is that that most US kids these days don't read history
unless it's required for school. They'd rather listed to rap on their
iPods on the way to McDonald's. I always enjoyed reading about other
places in other times and even historical novels. My mind boggles at the
ignorance of some of the youngsters today about even the history of
their own country.

What's sad is that people older than I am (I'm 27) and they don't know
about Watergate, and I do. Some people actually thought it was
something that a Democrat did; that "-gate" is a suffix attached to
anything that a Democrat does that is scandalous... such as "Filegate"
or "Cigargate" not knowing that the suffix -gate actually originated
with Watergate.

Good for you. So many don't even care about the history of their own

the American Civil War in the last half of the nineteenth century.

I recall a poll taken some time ago, I can't recall the exact figure,
but a fair percentage couldn't even find their own country on the map.
In recent poll on science, 255 of those who responded didn't know that
the Earth revolved around the Sun.

Heh! I've heard it said that she bears a strong resemblance to George
Washington.

Nice try, but it's still not anywhere close to the same thing. Nixon was
an active participant in the watergate cover up, it's on tape starting a
few days after the burglary, so there isn't any doubt he's guilty. Not
only that, he's on tape plotting all kinds of other illegal stuff
including OTHER break ins! One of his "advisers" somehow kept him from
going ahead with that stuff, but he was already bad enough.
Clinton lied about a BJ. In a lawsuit that should never have been
allowed to go forward. Even if he flashed Paula Jones (yuck), it's
hardly worth all the crap that happend. Of course, whitewater wasn't
anything much, so they HAD to do something to him.
And you think these two things are equal?? LOL
Like comparing a match to a tanker full of gas in BTU potential.
I still would like to know how Paula was able to afford a new Mercedes
SUV AND a high buck car before Clinton gave her a dime. That's on tape
too. Hmmmm.

Whitewater was *big*, they just couldn't pin it on the Clintons.

The whole point is that Tripp's "crime" was to expose a Presidential
secret, and she got vilified to the *max* while Felt basically got
lionized, even as an anonymous source.

An understandable reaction, I think, and one fully proportionate
to the difference between the two situations: in one case someone's
private sexual pecadillos were being pawed through; in the other,
the president was countenancing felonies in the interest of
sabotaging the political opposition, and subsequently obstructing
investigation and destroying evidence.

The whole point is that Tripp's "crime" was to expose a
Presidential secret, and she got vilified to the *max* while Felt
basically got lionized, even as an anonymous source.

An understandable reaction, I think, and one fully proportionate
to the difference between the two situations: in one case someone's
private sexual pecadillos were being pawed through;

Sexual harrassment is *not* a private peccadillo. I'm continually
amazed at how that little fact gets whitewatered.

You brought up Linda Tripp, so I assumed that you are contrasting
Watergate with Monicagate.

I'm contrasting Tripp's treatment with Felt's.

As was I. What Linda Tripp did was to broadcast girl-talk stories
Monica had confided in her; what Monica participated in was in
no way sexual harassment.

What Linda did was to illegally record private conversations
between herself and Monica Lewinsky without Monica's
knowledge. This is not the behavior of a 'friend'. Tripp should
have gotten a prison term for this. Her Republicans financial
supporters saw to it that she got away with her crime. Of
course, when they didn't need her anymore, they dumped her.

Which only proves my point. Felt broke all sorts of laws *and* his oath
to the FBI by revealing information about an ongoing investigation. He
too should have gone to jail, no matter that his information brought
down a President who deserved what he got.

Fred, the fact that the writer and, apparently you, don't see the
difference...is kind of scary.

It's like comparing a 747 to a hummingbird.

True, Nixon didn't commit the Watergate burglaries himself.
Clinton did commit sexual harrassment.

Nice try, but it's still not anywhere close to the same thing. Nixon
was an active participant in the watergate cover up, it's on tape
starting a few days after the burglary, so there isn't any doubt he's
guilty. Not only that, he's on tape plotting all kinds of other
illegal stuff including OTHER break ins! One of his "advisers" somehow
kept him from going ahead with that stuff, but he was already bad
enough.

Clinton lied about a BJ. In a lawsuit that should never have been
allowed to go forward. Even if he flashed Paula Jones (yuck), it's
hardly worth all the crap that happend. Of course, whitewater wasn't
anything much, so they HAD to do something to him.

Whitewater was *big*, they just couldn't pin it on the Clintons.

And you think these two things are equal?? LOL

Like comparing a match to a tanker full of gas in BTU potential.

I still would like to know how Paula was able to afford a new Mercedes
SUV AND a high buck car before Clinton gave her a dime. That's on tape
too. Hmmmm.

Yawn.

Yawn yourself. If you can't see the difference, ok, I guess that
explains your strange affection for Bush..

Linda was vilified for pretending to be a friend to Lewinski, wearing
a wire while pumping her as a friend and recording her private phone
conversations while pretending to be her friend.
Pretty low even for a republican.
Giving a ***** in no way attempted to change the out come of an

You obviously don't know much about sexual harassment. This was clearly
consensual sex and it did not result in job advancement, hostile
workplace environment, or interfering with professional/educational
performance. It was also not initiated by clinton but by lewinsky. Not
all sex between an employer and an employee is sexual harassment as you
seem to think. If repugs thought they could make charges of sexual
harassment stick then they would have tried it, rather than merely
resorting to "perjury".
