Democratic candidate apologizes after "Injun" remark |
To use such a vulgar ethnic slur in this supposed day and age of enlightment
is incomprehensible. Mr. Kagen should withdraw from this race immediately.
http://www.madison.com/tct/news/index.php?ntid=104449&ntpid=2
GREEN BAY (AP) - Democratic U.S. House candidate Steve Kagen apologized
Monday for commenting that he was late for a meeting on an Indian
reservation because "we're on Injun time."
"I did not mean any harm by my words, and I humbly apologize if I offended
anyone. That was not my intent," he said in a statement hours after the
National Republican Congressional Committee released a tape recording of the
comment.
Kagen attended a meeting Friday on the nearby Oneida Reservation, and at his
next stop in Green Bay he made the following remarks:
"Appreciate getting here almost on time. Our excuse in Oneida was, well,
we're on Injun time. They don't tell time by the clock. Our excuse here is
that I am a doctor and that we're never on time."

I have been interested in the Sudan for a long time. I started with
just an interested in the whole of the Nile river and then through the
horrible East African wars. But my concern got raised with the earlier
Sudanese civil war. I got very upset that the Sudan was engaged in
genocide and the world (and the U.S.) was looking at Iraq. I just
could not and can not understand why it was acceptable to use force in
Iraq and not in Sudan.

That's a good point.
I really think Bush has messed things up big time and it's going to
take a long time for us to get out of this one. In a way I can
understand the leaders in North Korea and Iran. While I still think
they are dangerous and we shouldn't trust them, I can almost understand
how they view us and why. And if I was the leader of a third world
country, I don't think I would want someone else coming in and telling
me what I could and could not have.

The administration fostered the notion that Iraq was a CAPD to the US
because of WMDs, its support of Terrists, its nuclear program, etc.
The same arguments cannot be made about the Sudan.
In addition, there is no local support for an invasion of the Sudan,
so the logistics of it would be nearly impossible to maintain.
Face it -- the US did not see a compelling case for a National
Interest in the Sudan. The administration couldn't even invent a
plausible one.

I guess I understand that and I don't. I don't disagree with you, I

Why do you find it so? Other than a Feel Good rationale, what
possible purpose would there be in fighting our way into and back out
of The Sudan, even given our overwhelming military superiority that
could be brought to bear?
We'd end up Deeply Fromaging the nations in the area, precisely None
of which were/are prepared to provide us with basing facilities from
which to launch such a foray.
I see a compelling national interest:
genocide is wrong, it is horribly wrong, and it goes against
everything the United States stands for.
I quite agree, but still assert that it doesn't really matter. This
is not singularly the USs fight. It is, if anything, something for
the International community to handle. It doesn't seem to wish to do
that.
Lacking that, why should we?
If we can't stand up and stop
genocide, then we are no better than anyone else and should stop
teaching our children that we are.
The references to If this Then that are content-free.
Nations have Interests.
Not friends, not causes -- just Interests.
We have no treaties with nations in the area, no interests to follow.
And as difficult as it might be to swallow, the simple Fact of the
matter is that if the folks in Darfur were to disappear entirely
tomorrow because of some epidemic, the world generally would take
little notice of the fact. Nothing would change, save that the uproar
would simply die out. Within a week, things would have moved on.
That's the Brutal Truth of it. It may be awful to contemplate, but
there it is.
Lacking some international move, along with the cooperation of other
nations in the area, we aren't going to Do anything much.
We have no National Interest that would be served by doing so.

I think you're right. And that's too bad.
The Albanians and Kosovars got help. It's unfortunate for the Darfurians (is
that what they're called? Sheesh, I don't even have any idea) that they just
don't happen to live anywhere important. But if no one else will help us, if
we can't get a "coalition of the willing" together, it'll just be the Big

I don't think we can do any good here, and that's sad.

Saw it at a midnight sneak preview around ought six or so and just about

Another very good film with Zero Mostel is 'The Producers' - great tune
out of that one was 'Springtime for Hitler'. 'Course my tastes also run

Rush is a pompous ***** (IMHO). I believe he's all about the shock
value of his show. Essentially, he's the radio equivalent of Jerry
Springer. Certianly, I wouldn't be proud of claiming to be a Rush fan.
(note, that's not a dig at you, as you've not really mentioned whether
you're a fan or not. If you are, please step back and re-examine his
show, I think you'll find some ugly stuff you maybe didn't see the
first time).

people to pay attention to the politicians.

If he did indeed say the things that others are claiming he said, then
he is indeed wrong for saying those things.
Like I said, I haven't listened to him in years, I got tired of his
constant bashing Democrats all the time, as if Republicans could do no
wrong. Both parties have faults, and I think it's important to keep
that in mind. I used to just follow along with the Republicans,
UNTIL..I was attacked by my own party. Simply because I started to
question Bush and the war in Iraq. It was then that I decided that I
would no longer goosestep with any party.
Regardless....I am independent now and I pay closer attention to both
parties.
