Denzel Washington |
I get a weekly update from snopes.com and came across this one about denzel
washington and meryl streep on a tv show- basically they have differing
political opinions
http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/denzel.asp?print=y
What interestedme was this quote by Denzel
Washington: "You know, I haven't seen 'Fahrenheit 9/11,' because I live in
America. I grew up here. I'm an ex-slave. I'm a result of what this country
can do. So it's nothing new to me. I'm not surprised at all. It's just
business as usual. What I want to talk about is, what are we doing right
now, today, for these young kids that are coming home? Are we embracing
them? I don't hear about them being lifted up. I mean, I'm not just talking
about a parade but -"
Um
Does he mean ex slave in the same sense that I am an ex naval sailor in the
2nd world war? Personally i would find someone who wasn't an ex anything
declaring themselves to be so. But that's just me.

Your question isn't answered, though. I can't help thinking
his wording stems from some of the same kind of thinking as
that which says Barak Obama is not a real African American
because his father came directly from Africa. It fails to
recognize that he grew up in the US and his experiences did
not differ from those whose families were brought generations
ago.

Don't take it to heart, he's just an actor. Actors get paid to act, what
they say is not to be taken serious unless of course they become governor
of California ;o)

On Mon 30 Aug 2004 05:40:04a, "kathryn" <bob@bob.com> kicked back with a
beer, ruminated at length, fell asleep, woke up, lit up a joint, then
fell asleep again after thoughtfully blurting out:

I think he means, "I'm descended from slaves." That's not exactly what
his quoted words mean, but I'm pretty sure that it's what he intended to
say.
