Object: "Desperate Housewives": mainstreaming immorality
As "Desperate Housewives" continues into the new season, the media hoopla
surrounding this primetime soap opera continues, stirring up interest in the
immoral themes. "Desperate Housewives" has been promoted as a 'guilty
pleasure'. Sinful things can seem pleasurable on the surface, but the
consequences bring heartache and destruction - just ask Eve. As viewers are
caught up in the tawdry story lines, they can easily become ensnared by the
rationalization of sin. Sadly, as this warped thinking is planted in hearts,
consciences are dulled and damage occurs.
"Desperate housewife' Gabrielle justifies her sin of adultery with a
teenager by telling her husband: "A woman does need to be loved. And so
since you didn't give it to me, I had to find it elsewhere." She then
flaunts her infidelity and goes on to tell her husband all the ways her
teenage lover 'loved' her: "Gently, savagely, frequently, upside down."
Gabrielle would be quite content with continuing her affair and stringing
along her husband. Adultery is rationalized and the sanctity of marriage is
undermined. In fact, marriage is made a mockery of in every story line of
the show.
However, marriage is not the only institution that "Desperate Housewives"
repeatedly attacks. Frequent jabs are made against Christianity as well.
Recently, Susan, a mother of a 15 year-old daughter, had no qualms about
considering moving in with boyfriend. In last night's episode, Susan is
shown entering a talent show with her daughter at church, performing "This
Little Light of Mine". One of the housewives states: "Remember, it's church.
They're going to be judging you." Sending the message that Christians are
"judgmental".
In addition to mainstreaming immorality, "Desperate Housewives" seems bent
on mainstreaming immodesty. Not just for teens, but also for the 'mature'
woman as well. The 'fashion' trend of "Desperate Housewives" is cleavage,
cleavage, and more cleavage. Not only is cleavage prevalently shown, but
every opportunity is seemingly taken to aim camera angles down the shirts of
every low-cut top worn.
Desperate Housewives, as it draws in a large female audience, legitimizes a
breakdown of morality that will cause untold damage. Damage that will have
an impact not only to individual lives and families, but ultimately to the
further tearing down of our culture.

Isn't this the theme of all soap operas? It's nothing new. Shakespeare wrote
about such themes, too. So did Chaucer. Hell, even the Bible has it.

I find it interesting that the most immoral thing of all in this series
didn't rate a mention in the above. The last episode that was aired on
mainstream TV in the UK showed Gabrielle discovering that she was pregnant
because her husband had tampered with her contraceptive pills, even though
he knew she definitely did not want children. I think this is tantamount to
rape, and, if she doesn't abort, I hope that it will transpire that the
gardener is the father ... her control-freak husband deserves all he gets.
Maybe, while he's in prison, Bubba will show him what it's like to be the
victim of a control freak.

Denying a woman abortion and forcing her to have a
child she doesn't want... a fundy isn't going to decry
something that he wants enshrined in law!

Indeed, yes - I'd forgotten that. Two highly immoral events then, which
didn't rate a mention by the author of the passage. Of course, since it was
a woman who was murdered, it's probably not thought of, by the fundies, as
being as bad as a woman being unfaithful to her husband or - heaven
forfend - displaying cleavage.

I'm sure the bible probably has something in it

death or something.

Of course it does. And everyone knows that you are supposed to have the

Sounds like the usual American TV pap then.
I am looking forward to the new drama series about the Roman Empire
starting on BBC TV next month. They promise gruesome battle scenes,
extreme cruelty and full frontal nudity. How else can you depict a
barabarous and cruel society? After the 9pm watershed of course when
kids are deemed to be safely tucked up in bed. It was a co-production
with US HBO.
No doubt the misery mongers here will get their knickers twisted and
foam at the mouth again about society coming crashing down, but the
BBC have already decided to commission a second series.

along her husband. Adultery is rationalized and the sanctity of marriage
is
undermined. In fact, marriage is made a mockery of in every story line
of
the show.

However, marriage is not the only institution that "Desperate
Housewives"
repeatedly attacks. Frequent jabs are made against Christianity as well.
Recently, Susan, a mother of a 15 year-old daughter, had no qualms about
considering moving in with boyfriend. In last night's episode, Susan is
shown entering a talent show with her daughter at church, performing
"This
Little Light of Mine". One of the housewives states: "Remember, it's
church.
They're going to be judging you." Sending the message that Christians
are
"judgmental".

In addition to mainstreaming immorality, "Desperate Housewives" seems
bent
on mainstreaming immodesty. Not just for teens, but also for the
'mature'
woman as well. The 'fashion' trend of "Desperate Housewives" is
cleavage,
cleavage, and more cleavage. Not only is cleavage prevalently shown, but
every opportunity is seemingly taken to aim camera angles down the
shirts
of
every low-cut top worn.

Desperate Housewives, as it draws in a large female audience,
legitimizes
a
breakdown of morality that will cause untold damage. Damage that will
have
an impact not only to individual lives and families, but ultimately to
the
further tearing down of our culture.

Is this it? The end of the world? The sky falling?? And with the downfall
we get....CLEAVAGE???? COUNT ME IN! It's a fun show off to a
pretty slow start. Hope things get turned up quite a bit in the next few
episodes. And god forbid that christians are presented as judgmental.
Sounds like no one is safe. Better hide the remote. Methinks Bill is
trying to get some money.

It's a fantastic show! The first several espisodes don't quite live up to
the hype, but stick with it. Like "Deadwood," it takes a little while, but
after that it _really_ gets going.

I was pretty pleased when HBO announced a second season; but be warned, it's
not as gruesome / sexually explicit as some might worry about. There is a
bit of full frontal though (including male). I think people anticipated more
depravity and less drama of the series.

It is good but don't expect much of the battle scenes. Battles are done, so
far, pretty much offscreen.

Actually I have just discovered "Desparate Housewives" will be showing
tonight in the UK on E4 (a Freeview Terrestial Digital channel.) Not a
channel I have ever watched since it consists mostly of rubbish like
"Friends", "Hollyoaks" and "Wife Swap" (not what it suggests) Too many
ad breaks anyway.

Sure, although they are all to homogenous for me. I liked the guy from San

Colbert called the pyramids and ornate burial grounds something like "Piimp

starting on BBC TV next month. They promise gruesome battle scenes,
extreme cruelty and full frontal nudity. How else can you depict a
barabarous and cruel society? After the 9pm watershed of course when
kids are deemed to be safely tucked up in bed. It was a co-production
with US HBO.

No doubt the misery mongers here will get their knickers twisted and
foam at the mouth again about society coming crashing down, but the
BBC have already decided to commission a second series.

On the subject of full frontal nudity: is global tv on the horizon?? There
are a
lot of shows in other countries that I would like to watch. Keep an eye out
for
'Wonder Showzen': Sesame Street and depraved lunacy.

As "Desperate Housewives" continues into the new season, the media
hoopla
surrounding this primetime soap opera continues, stirring up interest in
the
immoral themes. "Desperate Housewives" has been promoted as a 'guilty
pleasure'. Sinful things can seem pleasurable on the surface, but the
consequences bring heartache and destruction - just ask Eve. As viewers
are
caught up in the tawdry story lines, they can easily become ensnared by
the
rationalization of sin. Sadly, as this warped thinking is planted in
hearts,
consciences are dulled and damage occurs.

Gabrielle would be quite content with continuing her affair and
stringing
along her husband. Adultery is rationalized and the sanctity of marriage
is
undermined. In fact, marriage is made a mockery of in every story line
of
the show.

However, marriage is not the only institution that "Desperate
Housewives"
repeatedly attacks. Frequent jabs are made against Christianity as well.
Recently, Susan, a mother of a 15 year-old daughter, had no qualms about
considering moving in with boyfriend. In last night's episode, Susan is
shown entering a talent show with her daughter at church, performing
"This
Little Light of Mine". One of the housewives states: "Remember, it's
church.
They're going to be judging you." Sending the message that Christians
are
"judgmental".

In addition to mainstreaming immorality, "Desperate Housewives" seems
bent
on mainstreaming immodesty. Not just for teens, but also for the
'mature'
woman as well. The 'fashion' trend of "Desperate Housewives" is
cleavage,
cleavage, and more cleavage. Not only is cleavage prevalently shown, but
every opportunity is seemingly taken to aim camera angles down the
shirts
of
every low-cut top worn.

Desperate Housewives, as it draws in a large female audience,
legitimizes
a
breakdown of morality that will cause untold damage. Damage that will
have
an impact not only to individual lives and families, but ultimately to
the
further tearing down of our culture.

Is this it? The end of the world? The sky falling?? And with the downfall
we get....CLEAVAGE???? COUNT ME IN! It's a fun show off to a
pretty slow start. Hope things get turned up quite a bit in the next few
episodes. And god forbid that christians are presented as judgmental.
Sounds like no one is safe. Better hide the remote. Methinks Bill is
trying to get some money.

I have a steerable dish but get none of the US satellites but lots of
those depraved god channels are repeated along with several expat Arab
language stations from the USA.
Sesame Street - this is a Candadian kids channel? - we have had that
for years but not Wonder Showzen. We get Hercules from time
to time which I find amusing and Zena They have just done
a viewers best 100 sex scenes and Zena having an - innocent to
kids - bath with another girl was in the top 30. The winner was
Ursula Undress walking out of the sea in a Bond film.
There are several soft and hard porn channels but they are sub. only.
The amusing thing is that the fta god, sex (tits only) and shopping
channels are all jostling together down in the fag end of TV along
with one or two occult channels where they all belong. I guess all
together they don't register on the viewing charts for numbers
watching.

I'm sure it's a case of what I pay attention to and remember, but I thought
shows in Spain had married couples doing light bondage stuff??
You might have to go to you local library and ask for Wonder Showzen,
it's for the libreal minded ONLY. Sesame Street is the long running
public tv show for kids. I still fondly (fondling?) remember "Conjunction
Junction", which I've noticed has reappeared ocassionally after 30 plus
years.

Sesame Street - this is a Candadian kids channel?

Sesame Street first started around 1967, on CBC in Canada and PBS in the
States. Both countries vociferously claim it, but Canada is in the
right.;-{*}

Frank Oz, the guy behind the muppits, had been doing kids shows in the
USA for some time before the Sesame St. concept was developed. It just
happens that production Costs in Canada were more reasonable, and the
CBC was interested in the show, so the show was made here.
I had the great fortune to meat Frank Oz and his crew of creative
crazys at the VTR Production studios in Yorkville many yeas ago when I
did special effects for an Episode of the CBC's Muppiit spin-off chow,
Fraggle Rock. If you ever see a re-run of that show featuring a bunch
of Muppits cavorting in outer space to the Pointer Sister's "I'm so
excited"... then you saw my work :)
