Is religion supposed to be the justification for truth? Or is it supposed to
be the revelation of truth as it exists?

Neither. It's main purpose is to make its adherents feel superior.

Religion claims to be revelation of truth. What differs is how humans
interpret it. The most bitterly fought wars are wars of religion, because
both sides are convinced they are 100% right.
Distinguish between "Allah really told him" and "he thought Allah told him"
or: "His lust for his daughter needed a justification, and what better one
than going to the Highest." This chap has gone over the top of the Koran
to God Himself. Jesus on the other hand, supported his views with
Scripture continually.
His wife was a fool. Muslim women don't have much status. A heaven with
houris is a man's heaven, not a woman's (although the houris are only at
one level - presumably barred to women.) I am surprised that he got a
marriage ceremony, or that he could find a celebrant, when Muslim law
forbids it.
A rational, unselfish, good Muslim would not have done it. The reaction of
his community was outrage. We all know religious fanatics who
appear "devout." The French dramatist Moliere was going to subtitle a
play "The falsely devout man," but Church opposition made him tone it down.
I am very wary of anybody who claims a direct communication from their God,
particularly when the communication is of a kind that one would expect from
the Devil. Remember the saying "The Devil can cite Scripture to a purpose"
(usually quoted "to his purpose"). Remember the religious groups that
finished in mass suicides.
They tell me not to talk about my depression, but that and my legal work
representing drug addicts has made me aware that there are sick minds out
in the world. In the town where I practised, the one man nobody wanted as a
client was honest and straightforward. There was no ill-will in him; he
lent me a book about mental health. But his values were warped in a way
that seemed congenital. I inherited him, a new realtor took him on because
a new business can't afford to discriminate. Greengrass in the English
police series Heartbeat was the type, but he is a lovable clown, which
compensates.

That's the beauty of rambling, inconsistent and ambiguous religious
texts: Whatever your views, aspirations or desires, you will find
something in there to support you - however tenuously.
