they have no Constitutional right to be left alone
Tell it to the judge,
when pigeons pull you from the car

though violence, acceptance cannot be gained
They retort that they don't want acceptance
By now, they just want to see the bloodstains
You get the unsettling feeling
that these pigeons were professionally trained
These pigeons should just learn to accept
that their existence is just second-rate
Against violence, we will stand firm
We simply will not tolerate

converging evidence from electrophysiological, biochemical,
immunohistochemical, and genetic studies that show that the Kir2.
1 channel carries the fast inwardly rectifying currents found in

Negative currents hyperpolarized the membrane 20 mV before block
but 60 mV following block. RT-PCR studies revealed that the
pKir2.1 channels found in pigeon vestibular hair cells were also

Political Ill Wind?
Today in Austin, Texas, city streets were shut down in the State
Capitol on the eve of their legislative session because 60
pigeons, grackels and sparrows were found dead. I've heard of
political hot air but this seems to be a new form of political
toxic cloud accompanying the arrival of their state legislators.
And, in NYC, another ill wind was blowing.
Hmmmm. Better be careful to stay away from Jamestown on
Wednesday. Oh, that's right, there's no room for the public

Superstition in the Pigeon
One of Skinner's experiments examined the formation of
superstition in one of his favorite experimental animals, the
pigeon. Skinner placed a series of hungry pigeons in a cage
attached to an automatic mechanism that delivered food to the
pigeon "at regular intervals with no reference whatsoever to the
bird's behavior". He discovered that the pigeons associated the
delivery of the food with whatever chance actions they had been
performing as it was delivered, and that they subsequently
continued to perform these same actions.
One bird was conditioned to turn counter-clockwise about the
cage, making two or three turns between reinforcements. Another
repeatedly thrust its head into one of the upper corners of the
cage. A third developed a 'tossing' response, as if placing its
head beneath an invisible bar and lifting it repeatedly. Two
birds developed a pendulum motion of the head and body, in which
the head was extended forward and swung from right to left with
a sharp movement followed by a somewhat slower return.

In March 1998, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
cautioned residents of the English village of Seascale not to
eat pigeons. It seems that a couple of dead pigeons removed from
the garden of two sisters were found to have high levels of
radioactivity. The pigeons had roosted on buildings at the

POET'S POSTSCRIPT
Pigeons don't get much respect, sometimes called "flying rats".
People typically don't acknowledge the degree to which they
dehumanize other groups of human beings, but it is revealing
to see how even pigeons can sometimes seem to rank higher
than gays.
In Moscow, Vladimir Rebekka wants to send release 2014 pigeons
to advertise his city as a potential host of the 2014 Olympics.
The gay pride parade in Moscow, on the other hand, triggered
anti-gay violence, an ugly spectacle where the top religious
leaders virtually encouraged the violence and gave blessings
to neo-Nazis. In Russia's new-found capitalist squalor, the
role of religion as sycophant to corrupt power and purveyor
of hate also seems to have resumed its traditional role.
In the United States, gays were banned from using the phrase
"Gay Olympics", although the word "olympic" had been allowed
in other contexts, like "Dog Olympics".
In the state of Virginia, a court ruled there was no constitutional
right to hunt clay pigeons. It seems like even pigeons made of
clay get more consideration than gays, who were long treated as
criminals under Virginia law. Lesbian mother Sharon Bottoms
of Virginia had her child seized from her arms by the courts
of Virginia.
Even slave-women were often able to raise their own
children, at least until the children were old enough to be resold.
Issues of human dignity do not get much more basic than
this. Yet, the deeper that oppression becomes, the less
that is it seen and acknowledged as such. After watching
child seized from arms of mother, we hear that we have
never been oppressed. Never mind the history of death
penalties in the American colonies, burnings at the stake
in Europe, being thrown into concentration camps of Germany,
or into the gulags of Russia.
The massacre in Virginia Seung-Hui Cho does not sound
like sometimes seriously political, nothing on the order
of John Brown's massacre at Harper's Ferry, which was an
assault against slavery and helped to precipitate
the American Civil War.
Unless the media is censoring information, it sounds like
Cho was unreasonably disturbed by legitimate but relatively
minor humiliations, many of which were largely of his own
making.
Even if there was racial bigotry on the campus, it certainly
was not universal. Someone like Nikki Giovanni, a poet and
professor of his, was certainly someone who championed
racial justice (and also, interestingly, gay marriage).
Cho could have found more hospitable surroundings,
even in Virginia, if he had for example moved to the
closer-in suburbs of D.C.
Problems are magnified at college age, and seem insurmountable,
when they are not.
Cho, who sounds like he was probably heterosexual,
in spite of speculation to the contrary, also sounds like
someone of such abnormal reactions that it tends to
make one suspect things like "ventromedial prefrontal
cortex damage" - brain malfunction involving emotional
response. At that point, a human being is broken like
a watch that has lost a gear. It is meaningless even to
try talking about the person in everyday, normal terms.
Insults of classmates, and inability to get a date, are not
political issues and not reasons for violence.
Criminalization, dehumanization, demonizing, and interference
with basic relationships such as mother-and-child *are*
seriously political and can become justifications for violence
on a large scale. It is more possible, because many thousands
of people who have no particular emotional problems,
personality disorders, or neurological problems could
potentially arrive at the same conclusion.
I would try to advise the Russia, America, China,
all cultures, all over the world, really - it is pointless to
dehumanize people and then tell them not to dare
be "terrorists". The more important realization is
that less dehumanization brings less violence.
Even pigeons can be effective spies, so the same
could be hoped of classes of people who are sometimes
are given even less consideration than pigeons.
