Object: Different xtian sects kick sh*t out of each other in N Ireland.
Anyone fancy a riot? It seems any excuse will do for the god-soaked thugs of
Belfast's streets.
This time it's football. A sport, FFS. "Catholic" Glasgow Celtic Football Club
failed to gain the top spot in the Scottish Premier League, that place being
taken by their bitter rivals "Protestant" Glasgow Rangers.
Despite some efforts recently to remove the sectarian connection between
Scotland's two top clubs, the rivalry verging on hatred between the two sets of
fans continues. Not just in Scotland but possibly to an even greater extent in
Ireland, especially the north.
Of course, when the catholic thugs run out of protestant thugs to kick the *****
out of, they turn on the police.

As i keep pointing out the whole sectarian thing isn't *really* about
theological differences for the majority of those involved - frankly they
aren't smart enough for it to be that. It's simply "them" & "us". If we
were all atheists it would be nationalists & loyalists

Er, no. If you were all atheists there wouldn't be denominational
schools. Protestant sectarianism is also cultivated in church. It's
what the free Presbyterians are there for. Paisley is now the
spiritual leader of the loyalist communities as well as the temporal
leader. The insistence on abject 'decommissioning' was always a device
to ensure the power sharing process ultimately failed. It was an
election winner. There is now no alternative voice, the voters have
silenced it.
The catholics are acutely aware of the history underlying their
struggle, which is very much about theological positions. They sing
songs about history round the home fires and in the pubs, and that
history is about wars fought over whether the Pope is the antichrist
(all protestants are meant to believe this, it's in the Geneva Bible),
or the infallible spokesman for God almighty.
If Eamon De Valera hadn't been a fascist hell bent on building a
Catholic theocracy in the republic, and if the Protestant Orange
Lodges hadn't obstructed social justice in the North for so many
decades, there might have been a solution decades ago. Between them
thay have made life itself the price of moderation.
Maybe your average Taig or Proddy in the street is too thick to
understand it all, but they are easily led by those that are not. It
is about power bases, but without religion, there are no power bases
in Northern Ireland. If you want to look the other way you could also
blame parliamentary democracy, but that's based on demography, which
is based on ethnicity, which, in NI, is based on religion.

If you were all atheists why would the loyalists be loyalists?

True, but it is made a religious issue when kids in Ireland are
force-fed religion in schools. If they completely banned religious
education, it would become a political issue. Although that would no
doubt still cause problems, I do not think they would be on the same
scale. It would hinge on the issues and people would be free to have
different opinions. It would not hinge on a vague idea brainwashed
into them - that people of another religion are evil. Although they
may not be thinking about god when they batter someone to death, they
have been conditioned to regard the other side as being different and
inferior. That's the true evil of religion because it goes far beyond
political differences and enables people to justify atrocities.
