MARK KNOPFLER
....
In '93 Mark was made an honorary Doctor of Music at Newcastle University and
in '99 was appointed as an Officer of the British Empire. He's also well
known for drinking cups of tea rather than bottles of whiskey on stage! A
very dignified type of rock god is our Mark.
Our favourite quote about Mark Knopfler is from British author and humorist
Douglas Adams who wrote in his book *So Long And Thanks For All The Fish*:
"Mark Knopfler has an extraordinary ability to make a Schecter Custom
Stratocaster hoot and sing like angles on a Saturday night, exhausted from
being good all week and needing a stiff beer."

At 11:37 pm (August 22, 2007), the Holy Ghost moved upon me to quote this
Scripture:
1 Hear ye the word of the Lord, ye officers of Babylon the Great; Yea ye
which support and sustain that system which is corrupt and not right before
me, saith the Lord God of Israel;
2 Ye shall be cut out of the land and shall have no more place in it, as
those nations which inhabited the land before thee.
3 Yea, ye and those merchants whom ye do uphold and sustain in the greed
thereof, in the which my people who are of the House of Israel, even Jacob,
my chosen, are trodden down, for they have no place left in it, even in the
earth, for behold hath it not been all bought and sold, even by thee, saith
the Lord?
4 For what good man of a vineyard, when it is that he desireth to plant a
pleasing vine unto him that he may enjoy the fruit thereof which is most
pleasing, doth he not first set about the vineyard, and that which cumbereth
the ground thereof, yea even the wild weeds and brambles, and that which
cumbereth the ground, doth not the Lord of the vineyard go about and hew
down that which cumbereth the ground of his vineyard?
5 And who is it that opposeth him in these things, saith the Lord?
6 For shall the clay say unto the potter he hath no cunning or art, yea,
who shall say he is not also the Lord of his vineyard?
7 Therefor all ye that buy up houses that there is no room in the land for
the greed thereof, ye shall know that I am he that doth move and speak unto
thee, even by the power contained within my voice, yea, even all who go
about and seek their own wills and not to do the Lord's will who is the Lord
of that vineyard, shall ye not be hewn down and cast, even into the fire,
saith the Lord?
8 For ye do trespass upon my holy land, which I, the Lord God have reserved
unto my people who are of Jacob.
9 And behold ye, ye greedy merchants, who think ye are immune, ye shall
know that I am God and that none oppose the might of my arm which shall
destroy that which is not pleasing unto me, that my people Israel, who shall
be gathered out by the hand of my servant, even he who wast Mighty and
Strong, yea from before the foundation of the world, that they, even Israel
may have their inheritance.
10 And that which cumbereth the ground of my vineyard, shall it not be
gathered by mine angels and burned in that day that ye know not of, saith
the Lord of terrible might and burnings?
11 For my hand is it not over all, saith the Lord, that nothing peeps
except it is that I the Lord know it?
12 For the cries of my servants, even Israel whom ye have persecuted, saith
the Lord, have ascended up unto me, even in these things, saith the Lord, in
which ye persecute the meek and the poor of the earth with vexatious
lawsuits and unrighteous dominion and laws which ye think successfully
interdict the decrees of the Most High, whom ye know not of, nor care.
13 Therefor, ye shall know in this day that I the Lord your God, even Jesus
of Nazereth who overturned the tables of the moneychangers because of the
zeal of my Father's House, had it not eaten me up?
14 And did they not crucify me because of this, even as they beheaded John
the Baptist for his zeal which offended their order, saith the Lord, even as
they have killed John Singer in this day because of his offense against your
iniquity in mixing with Cain which he desired righteously that his children
not be subjected to your ignorance in these things, saith the Lord, which
thing grieved his spirit almost unto death because of your ignorance, O ye
Gentiles?
15 And thus are ye at war with the heavens, O man, and ye shall see my
mighty ones when they come in their glory at thee with my vengeance for the
blood of the prophets, even Joseph and Hyrum, and John whom ye have shed,
who hath power, O ye wicked and perverse generation.
16 Ye are just like unto them of old in your iniquity, saith the Lord!
17 And did I not overturn the tables in the Temple of Solomon in that day?
18 And I have spoken these words unto you.

But citing Dire Straits among your religious mantras was a nice touch.
The "Lord's poor" or the "devil's poor"? (Borrowing Brigham Young's words,
or modern Scripture)
Introduction
Dire Straits are not cool. They did not shift the musical paradigm, nor did
they even write great music - from a pure technical standpoint, that is. And
they're immensely popular. The disproportion is painful, and so it is
understandable that a lot of the more intelligent public for miles around
and more again is distinctly alergic towards Mark Knopfler and his brand of
songwriting. Yet the fact alone that a band as seemingly 'unimaginative' as
Dire Straits, who seemed to be stuck in a timewarp and successfully ignoring
just about every new trend and brand of music that'd appear since the late
Seventies, could manage to strike it big, first among the critical crowds of
the day, and then with the commercially-oriented LP-buying crowds of the
day, is worth acknowledging even by Knopfler's biggest enemies. If anything,
Dire Straits were one of the few bands of the late Seventies/early Eighties
proved that the "old school" of music-making was still vital despite any of
the prog or punk or New Wave or synth-pop tendencies of the time. In a more
risky way, they preferred to take the 'bluesy' way, writing songs that were
based on ace guitar playing, soulful vocal delivery and
whatever-could-be-that-third-thingie-that-comes-along-with-the-blues rather
than songs based on firm pop hooks. Hence, the acute boredom often induced
on people by the band. Hence all the problems...
....and hence all the success and all the uniqueness - after all, at any
given time any country in the world needs a bunch of middle-aged
philosophically-minded spiritual gurus, and Mark Knopfler qualifies in a
definite way.

The Lord's Dire Straits, i.e. Knopfler's Peak, or the devil's own, all
retrogressing liar ingrates?
The Lord God of Israel has deigned to reveal to your humble narrator a
wayfaring fool, that is to sum up all that God has revealed to your fool
concerning Dire Straits (on several occasions), that specific Dire Straits
lyrics, being inspired of Him, serve as a choice instrument of war, or
"greased feathers" (Scripture given through Brigham Young) as it were,
against unbelievers and the wicked. I suppose it is according to the
principle of least action or the Economy of Heaven, as the Apostle
Brigham would say (and therefore not according to the Heisenberg
uncertainty principle).

4MMM FM Interview
Here is an almost complete transcript of an interview with Mark Knopfler by
David White of 4MMM FM in Brisbane, Australia, broadcast on Sunday morning,
10th November 1991.
....
DW : One of the most moving stories I ever saw was that young boy suffering
from, correct me if I'm wrong, I think it was leukemia, who got a chance to
play with you in London.
MK : Nathan!
DW : Nathan, yes, I mean it was a wonderful story. Will you be perchance
er.. meeting him again.. you know...
MK : Yes! I'm going to see how he's getting on and see how his playing is
coming along. I gave him a guitar that we used on Private Investigations, so
.... he's got that and I'll just see how he's coming on with it.
(((( SONG : CALLING ELVIS ))))
DW : ...o the obvious question is : In your travels have you seen the man?
MK : Ah, no I never met... Oh yes I've seen him in a shopping mall in St.
Lois or something... (they laugh)... I think when I was four years old, I
went up to my dad and I said "Once you're dead, you're dead for life."...
which he thought was pretty funny. And I still believe that really so I
don't think Elvis is kicking around anywhere.
....
DW : 'The Bug' from what I can work out, a little personal philosophy, when
you're on a roll, don't try and analyse it, just enjoy it while it lasts.
MK : That's a... it's a... just a stupid idea. Sometimes you're the
windshield, sometimes you're the bug.
DW : I mean are you great believer in fate or you are master of your own
destiny type stuff. I mean, you know, you're extrapolating a bit on from
that simplistic view.
MK : Well I don't think you're supposed to know. I don't think you are
supposed to know the answer to that question. I think what you're supposed
to do is say "I don't know". More and more things happen to me that seem to
be more of a coincidence, more and more things happen where you're tempted
to think that things are mapped out and you're tempted to think that there's
a connection between seemingly disparate events. You're not suppose to know
because if you knew that for sure then you'd say er.. you'd say well then "I
believe in God" or whatever.."I believe in" er...and I think if you knew
that for sure then it would spoil something. I don't think that we ever will
know. I don't think we ever will know the answer to that question no matter
how far science goes. No matter how... whether you know how the
universe...think you know how the universe came about. I don't think you'll
ever know. I don't think you're supposed to know.

Journal of Discourses, Vol.5, Pg.125 - Pg.126, Brigham Young, August 9,
1857:
As brother Taylor has said, speaking of the wisdom and power exhibited by
the people of the world, there are men of talent, of thought, of reflection,
and knowledge in all cunning mechanism: they are expert in that, though
they do not know from whence they receive their intelligence. The Spirit of
the Lord has not yet entirely done striving with the people, offering them
knowledge and intelligence; consequently it reveals unto them, instructs
them, teaches them, and guides them even in the way they like to travel.
Men know how to construct railroads and all manner of machinery; they
understand cunning workmanship, &c.; but that is all revealed to them by the
Spirit of the Lord, though they know it not.
You can find in the minds of the people most admirable intelligence in
things pertaining to the world; but when you touch the intelligence that
pertains to other worlds, to the kingdom of heaven and heavenly things, they
are dark as midnight darkness--so dark as this, that, let ever so good a
thing be revealed to them, no matter how good for a nation, a people, a
community, or an individual--let a man have it revealed to him how he can
benefit the whole nation, they turn around and deny God in it. They are so
dark as that, when they never received a particle of intelligence but what
came from God. They are filled with darkness.
Instead of wishing injuries to come on them, my heart is pained for them
when I behold their situation.
Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Section Six 1843-44 Pg.370:
It is all over the face of the Bible. It stands beyond the power of
controversy. A wayfaring man, though a fool, need not err therein.
Joseph Fielding Smith, Gospel Doctrine, Pg.60:
Thus the Spirit and power of God -- the Comforter -- may be in us as a well
of water springing up unto everlasting life. We will bear record of the
Father, testifying of Jesus, and "take of the things of the Father and
reveal them unto us," confirming our faith, establishing us in the truth,
that we shall be no longer tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine; but
shall "know of the doctrine" whether it be of God or of man. This is the
course -- it is simple, reasonable and consistent. Who is there with common
abilities that can fail to see, or comprehend it? Indeed, in the language of
the Scriptures it is so plain, that "the wayfaring man, though a fool, need
not err therein."
David O. McKay, Gospel Ideals, Pg.7:
THE ESSENCE OF THE GOSPEL. But in considering his answer another question
arises. If ye will do the will -- what is the will? We can see what
conditions will bring eternal life. We have the spoken statement that if we
will do his will, we shall know; but now comes the question, what is the
will? And therein, my brethren and sisters, is the whole essence of the
gospel of Jesus Christ -- just as plainly as Jesus stated and defined what
is eternal life or how we should know it, just as plainly as he laid down
that test, just as plainly has he expressed what his will is.
I am not going to take time -- it would not be wise, even if I could -- to
narrate all the principles that constitute that will; but they are so simple
that, as the scriptures say, a wayfaring man, though a fool, need not err
therein.
8 And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way
of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it [shall be] for
those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err [therein].
(Old Testament | Isaiah 35:8)
Let's start with the Euler-Lagrange-Hamilton Principle of Least/Stationary
Action, if
you are physics minded. Brigham Young summed it up by declaring, "economy of
heaven". Is there anything uncertain about that?
Journal of Discourses, Vol.4, Pg.203, Brigham Young, February 1, 1857:
What do you know on natural principles? I do not say natural philosophy,
because my religion is natural philosophy. You never heard me preach a
doctrine but what has a natural system to it, and, when understood, is as
easy to comprehend as that two and two equal four. All the revelations of
the Lord Almighty to the children of men, and all revealed doctrines of
salvation are upon natural principles, upon natural philosophy.
Journal of Discourses, Vol.4, Pg.283, Brigham Young, March 15, 1857:
You know that almost every man who becomes a public speaker uses certain
peculiar words to convey particular ideas, selects a vocabulary and
arrangement more or less peculiar to himself, thereby causing that great
variety of style observed in speakers and writers. I have mine, which is
peculiar to me. Did you ever see a man who had such a peculiar vocabulary
as brother Heber has? I never did. Orson Hyde has a mode of expression
peculiar to himself, and so has every public speaker. My use of language is
good to me; and though others may use different words to convey the same
ideas, let me give out those ideas in my own style, according to my
understanding.
93 What I have said unto you must needs be, that all men may be left without
excuse;
94 That wise men and rulers may hear and know that which they have never
considered;
95 That I may proceed to bring to pass my act, my strange act, and perform
my work, my strange work, that men may discern between the righteous and the
wicked, saith your God.

Dear idiot boy, this line does not appear in Lennon's book. Lying
"Christians"
frequently alter the actual line so that they can claim that Lennon is
writing
about Jesus Christ. Anyone who actually reads the book, as you apparently
have
not,
No I have not. Just happened to find it on this website:
http://www.stargods.org/EvilBeatles.html
knows that the actual line explicitly refers to the main character of the
book, Jesus El Pifico, and that the book does not compare him to Jesus
Christ by
allusion or any other literary device, or use him to symbolize Jesus
Christ in
any way. I am willing to bet that now that this has been brought to your
attention you will not have the honest decency to admit your error
Don't bet your Colorado mountain farm on it, a spare change maybe, since I

to have been arranged otherwise.

MARK KNOPFLER
[not a genuine Knopfler quote, by Cane Toad Warrior]
I started out in music only one year after the Sex Pistols, yet I still
manage to sound like the guitar equivalent of Mormon Christianity.
[end of excerpt]
The point is, at least for now I won't be quoting John Lennon on what turns
out to be Heysoose El Pifico, which fictional character may or may not have
been built up in allusion to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Because
I have not read that book by Lennon but relied on one website,
http://www.stargods.org/EvilBeatles.html -- for now I'll take your word for
it, though I just found at least one other website that quotes the same,
except El Pifico is included and claims that it's in blasphemous reference
to the Lord of glory, though no additional evidence is given.
For various reasons, I do know that John Lennon did say this and therefore
will continue to quote this:
"Christianity will go, it will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue about
that. I'm right and will be proved right. You just wait.. . .We're more
powerfull than Jesus ever was.." Jesus was all right, but his disciples were
thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me." John Lennon
http://www.stargods.org/EvilBeatles.html
Or in other words, I know for sure that Lennon once said, "We're more
powerful than Jesus ever was" or something to that effect in the mid-1960s,
or something that went like (from at least two different sources), "We're
more popular than Jesus ..." and that the group as a whole nurtured Satanic
affinities, more especially the sick Lennon-McCartney duo.
"Christianity will go, it will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue about
that. I'm right and will be proved right ... We're more popular than Jesus
now." (San Francisco Chronicle -- April 13, 1966)

(((( SONG : CALLING ELVIS ))))
DW : ...o the obvious question is : In your travels have you seen the man?
MK : Ah, no I never met... Oh yes I've seen him in a shopping mall in St.
Lois or something... (they laugh)... I think when I was four years old, I
went up to my dad and I said "Once you're dead, you're dead for life."...
which he thought was pretty funny. And I still believe that really so I
don't think Elvis is kicking around anywhere.

~~Journal of Discourses, Vol.5, Pg.126, Brigham Young, August 9, 1857
1 Do ye indeed speak righteousness, O congregation? do ye judge uprightly, O
ye sons of men?
2 Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in
the earth.
3 The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be
born, speaking lies.
(Old Testament | Psalms 58:1 - 3)
John Lennon:
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
So your objection over "Heysoose El Pifico" is irrelevant. Besides, one
generally cannot hear oneself think with The Beatles being played in the
background. It's musical soma, as David Bowie once said in a candid moment.

I read that book. The quote has Jesus' surname - El Pifco -
missing. Why is that?
Please go over my above reply to the Stalking Mastermind, if you have not

Don't bet your farm on it, even though I am Dumbo the Republicon Pachyderm.
I'm not even going to get into Helter Skelter. Let this suffice:
Sid Bernstein observed, “Only Hitler ever duplicated [the Beatles’] power
over crowds. … when the Beatles talk—about drugs, the war in Vietnam,
religion—millions listen, and this is the new situation in the pop music
world” (Time, Sept. 22, 1967, p. 60). Rock critic Vern Stefanic noted that
“Lennon was more than a musician” because he promoted “an anti-God theme,
and anti-America, pro-revolution stance” (Tulsa World, Dec. 12, 1980, p.
20). The Beatles even pioneered the longhaired look. “. . . the major
impulse behind the rock androgyny of the Sixties was, in fact, of foreign
origin . . . the Beatles. . . . the haircuts were so revolutionary by
Sixties standards that they were viewed as signs of incipient transvestism”
(Steven Simels, Gender Chameleons: Androgyny in Rock ‘n’ Roll, pp.
29,30,32). Paul McCartney admitted their role in destroying traditional
convention: “There they were in America, all getting house-trained for
adulthood with their indisputable principle of life: short hair equals men;
long hair equals women. Well, we got rid of that small convention for them.
And a few others, too” (Barbara Ehrenreich, “Beatlemania: Girls Just Wanted
to Have Fun,” cited by Lisa Lewis, The Adoring Audience: Fan Culture and
Popular Media, p. 102). ... The group changed its name to the Silver Beetles
in 1960, then simply to the Beatles, referring to the beat of their music.
“John Lennon changed the name to Beatles to accent the drive of their music,
the BEAT” (H.T. Spence, Confronting Contemporary Christian Music, p. 78).
.... The Beatles set the tone for rock music and for the hippie youth
culture in the 1960s until the band broke up in 1969. They led a generation
of rebellious youth from marijuana to acid to “free sex” to eastern religion
to revolution and liberal political/social activism. David Noebel observes:
“The Beatles set trends, and their fans followed their lead. They were the
vanguard of an entire generation who grew long hair, smoked grass, snorted
coke, dropped acid, and lived for rock ‘n’ roll. They were the ‘cool’
generation” (The Legacy of John Lennon, p. 43).

Sir, we who are weary of posting salute you: 888!
888 -- a.k.a. the Mark of the Hermit (of three infinities)
6 They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about
the city.
7 Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords [are] in their lips: for
who, [say they], doth hear?
8 But thou, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in
derision.

Those guitar licks never get old.
And Industrial Disease still kicks *****.
Warning lights are flashing down at quality control
Somebody threw a spanner and they threw him in the hole
There's rumors in the loading bay and anger in the town
Somebody blew the whistle and the walls are coming down
There's a meeting in the boardroom, they're trying to trace the smell
There's leaking in the washroom, there's a sneak in personnel
Somewhere in the corridors someone was heard to sneeze
Goodness me could this be industrial disease?
The caretaker was crucified for sleeping at his post
They're refusing to be pacified - it's him they blame the most
The watchdog's got rabies the foreman's got fleas
And everyone's concerned about industrial disease
There's panic on the switchboard, tongues are tied in knots
Some come out in sympathy, some come out in spots
Some blame the management, some the employees
And everybody knows its the industrial disease
The work force is disgusted, downs tools and walks
Innocence is injured, experience just talks
Everyone seeks damages and everyone agrees
"That these are classic symptoms of a monetary squeeze"
On ITV and BBC they talk about the curse
Philosophy is useless, theology is worse
History boils over, there's an economics freeze
Sociologists invent words that mean industrial disease
Doctor Parkinson declared "I'm not surprised to see you here
"You've got smokers cough from smoking, brewers droop from drinking
beer"
"I don't know how you came to get the Betty Davis knees"
"But worst of all young man you've got industrial disease!"
He wrote me a prescription, he said "you are depressed"
"But I'm glad you came to see me to get this off your chest"
"Come back and see me later - next patient please"
"Send in another victim of industrial disease"
I go down to speakers corner I'm thunderstruck
They got free speech, tourists, police in trucks
Two men say theyre Jesus - one of them must be wrong
They got a protest singer singing a protest song - he says
"They wanna have a war to keep us on our knees"
"They wanna have a war to keep their factories"
"They wanna have a war to stop us buying Japanese"
"They wanna have a war to stop industrial disease"
"They're pointing out the enemy to keep you deaf and blind"
"They wanna sap your energy, incarcerate your mind"
"They give you Rule Brittania, gassy beer, page three"
"Two weeks in Espana and Sunday striptease"
Meanwhile the first Jesus says "I'd cure it soon"
"Abolish Monday mornings and Friday afternoons"
The other one's on a hunger strike he's dying by degrees
How come Jesus gets industrial disease?
(I'm off, I'm sick!)
