In an odd replay of history, the Vatican has attempted to establish
the Divine Right of Kings for the US. Only with its blessing will world
rulers have the authority of God behind their dicta, making Kerry
a "usurper of the throne" should he win the election.
Europe was ruled by Kings of Divine Right in 1776. George III got
his from the Archbishop of Canterbury because of all that ruckus
with Henry VIII, but the rest turned to Rome for coronation. Now
we see the medieval mind of the Vicar of Christ deciding to influence
the elections here, with a volatile threat to deny Kerry communion.
Shades of 1490.
How can Kerry get out of this one without leaving the Church? And
wouldn't leaving the Church for, oh...I have no idea. Obviously, he
can't run as an atheist, although he could well be one. (I'd bet a
substantial sum that Clinton is an atheist, but I don't hold that
against him. 8^) Maybe he could switch to Episcopalian or something.
