DNA of Civilization |
Last night on the Larry King show, a minister for the ammendment claimed
that marriage between a man and a woman was the DNA of civilization.
Since all life procreates, what does this have to do with civilization?

It shows that a "minister" can lie his fucking arse off on national TV, and
get away with it, because if he is called on it, the sheep-brained multitude
will accuse the caller of blasphemy, such is the sorry "state of the union".
Beware of "Cretins carrying Bibles", their rule is closer than you think...

Bush called it "sacred". Which it only is in the imagination of
believers.
A couple of colleagues at work yesterday were saying that it should
only be called marriage if it's in church and a civil union if it's by
a judge or a Las Vegas wedding parlour etc.
Which is just plain silly. That would prevent even heterosexual
couples being married if it wasn't in church.

I agree. Just let it be called marriage and if any church doesn't want to
perform the ceremony, that is their right. Catholic churches have been
refusing to perform marriage ceremonies for divorced people for ages. They
are not breaking any laws, it is an issue that is strictly within the
church. So, another argument - that not having this ammendment will put a
burden on the churches - is bogus too.

I dunno. I popped into another group and they are calling it the DNA of
culture. Well, I guess the point is, if you don't have any people, then you
can't have any civilization or culture. Sort of going from A-Z in one fell

This is one of the more sillier arguments that I've been hearing. They
think that if we allow gays to marry, gays can't reproduce so the human
race will die out. Nonsense! For one thing, gays are a minority (10% is
the figure often given, but I don't know if this has been updated) and
there are many more heterosexual couples out there ready, willing, and
able to do what is needed to keep the race going.Furthermore, gays can
and do reproduce by artificial insemination for the women and sperm
donation for the guys.
A relatively small number of gay marriages is not going to destroy
anything.

Of course. The argument is so outlandish, and out of my realm of thinking,
that I was stymied at first.

Last night I watched the Bill Maher show. Via simulcast, a fundie for the
ammendment - a young pretty woman - gave her views. The audience was
laughing at everything she said. She got a bit upset at the laughing, so
renewed her vigor. The audience laughed harder. When she was off, another
guest - an Irish atheist who was in the Lord of the Rings - said, "Ah, such
a pretty girl, but so screwed up in the head." The audience roared and
clapped. Liberal to middling audience, but it is a hopeful sign that this
may be one of those things that is just laughed out of existence.
I notice that in interview programs the anchors can hardly keep a straight
face.

Under normal circumstances, this all would probably die down in a few
weeks, but unfortunately this is an election year. Bush and the Repubs
need an issue that diverts attention from Iraq fiasco, the lousy
economy, loss of jobs, and the the trashing of the enviroment.
Hopefully the Dems will ignore the culture wars rhetoric and stick to
the important issues.

A friend of mine put it rather well. He claims that marriage between a
man and a woman is indeed necessary for the state, since procreation
between them creates more taxpayers....that's why it is being made a
federal issue.

that marriage between a man and a woman was the DNA of civilization.
In other words, the foundation of society. Same sexes cannot breed and
continue the society (or the species, for that matter). Look at the Shaker
society. Very devout in their beliefs, but also very Celibate.
Consequently their society rapidly diminished in numbers.

Lo, many moons past, on Wed, 25 Feb 2004 17:00:07 -0500, a stranger

tale in alt.atheism
that marriage between a man and a woman was the DNA of civilization.

Ever get tired of being wrong?
Go look up "in vitro fertilization."
2 men can hire a surrogate, and the child will be the biological
chirld of one of them.
2 women can use a sperm bank, or ask a friend to donate sperm, and
carry the child to term with the same biological legacy as a child
born to a heterosexual couple.
These are the same methods used by infertile straight couples (who are
allowed to marry without question.)
Oh, there are over 100,000 children in the US awaiting adoption.

Obviously you don't read well.
Yes, you can use in vitro, sperm bank, or whatever. I said "same sexes
cannot breed". I didn't say they could not be given the opportunity to
raise a child.
You flamin' ***** far lefters and righters are all the same. Someone doesn't
say every word exactly as you would say it, and maybe has some intelligent
thought behind their words, which, obviously, you're incapable of
comprehending, and you go off the deep end into oblivious, non-sensical
insults.
Have a good day.

called by some "GR" <answer@ingroup.com> came forth and told this
tale in alt.atheism
that marriage between a man and a woman was the DNA of
civilization.
In other words, the foundation of society. Same sexes cannot breed and
continue the society (or the species, for that matter). Look at the
Shaker
society. Very devout in their beliefs, but also very Celibate.
Consequently their society rapidly diminished in numbers.

Considering I write and edit as part of my living, I'd consider myself
to be a damn good reader.

So what was your intent? You seemed to be linking the ability to
procreate to the right of marriage. You also, from my reading, seemed
to be limiting the concept of "breeding" to the sexual act. These
days, that's not the only way.
Have a good day.
Great one, thanks.

Not at all. Someone entered a post quoting another writer who said
"marriage is the DNA of society", and asked what people thought they meant
by that. I simply stated they were probably referring to the idea that
society grows and continues when two people reproduce offspring, and the
most socially acceptable, and Biblically sanctioned, method through the
ages has been through the institution of marriage. Obviously it's not the
only way.
You also, from my reading, seemed

OK, "breeding" was probably a pwc (poor word choice). There are other
methods of reproduction, but they all require the interrelationship, either
directly or indirectly, of one gender's egg and the other's sperm to
produce offspring. Two males or two females, regardless of the sexual acts
in which they engage with their same sex partner, cannot reproduce
offspring directly through such acts.

Actually it's being made a "federal issue" because Bush needed to do
something to hold on to his right-wing ultra-conservative base that he had
recently offended on a couple major issues.

A friend of mine put it rather well. He claims that marriage between a
man and a woman is indeed necessary for the state, since procreation
between them creates more taxpayers....that's why it is being made a
federal issue.

What kiind of minister is a minister for theamendment? I've heard of Litheran
ministers, Methodist ministers and ministers of foreign affairs, finance, and
what have you. But a minister for the amendment is a new one - minister for
the amendment of what?

President Bush has given the okay to start the process of ammending the U.S.
Constitution. The new ammendment will ban same-sex marriages at the federal
level. Some states, recently the Massachussettes high court, have allowed
same sex marriages. In order to stop the states from deciding this issue on
their own, Bush has decided to try to ammend the Constitution by barring the
states from making this decision. He believes (or says he does) that the
definition and sanctity of heterosexual unions is in jeopardy in this
country.
Someone in this newsgroup called it the Penis/Vagina Ammendment which I
think was right on the mark.
The issue is being discussed on various TV talk shows and in the newspapers
as it should be. The minister I referred is a Christian minister
representing a religious right-wing church, I didn't make note of the name
of the church. He has no official government capacity, he is speaking for
the religious groups who want this ammendment.
I hope this answered your questions.
