do atheists hate their Dads ? |
my Dad once called me a ***** in the Knights of St Columba Club when
I was helping him and his friend Louis clean the bar
He just said it out of the side of his mouth as I was stood next to
him - I later thought maybe it was directed towards Louis
anyway, my Dad died a few months later for His sins
the next time I walked past the KSC club, which was closed down, I was
carrying a football (soccer ball) and I lifted it above my head,
looked into the sky and told Him, "This is my Life"
I have now applied to be a member of the KSC...
Father Michael Lavin, my Parish Priest, of Sacred Heart Church,
Blackburn, gave a really good sermon today, watch out for him, he may
be the next English Pope... www.sacredheartblackburn.org.uk

I think you'll find all die, good and bad alike.

After some promotion, no doubt.
Still quite what that has to do with the subject at hand quite escapes
me, though the theory is fairly old, originated by Paul Vitz, IIRC.

Seems a bit trite all in all and similarly whether atheism is true or
not seems to have been lost in the shuffle, while of course one may
posit that theists never recover from finding out their fathers are
fallible, and go on to seek an infallible substitute whose
infallibility is demonstrated by resounding silence.

I don't know what you think you are doing comparing me to the Vitz
fellow, I didn't click on the URL so I don't know what you are getting
at
but I tell you something my Dad still addresses me as Lad, as He did
when He was on Earth and there is only silence between me and my Dad
when I am in company of others, the rest of the time I hear my Dad's

IIRC, Vitz originated the conjecture that atheists don't get on with
their fathers, and consequently, reject the father figure of God.

Generally speaking talking to dead people can be of some cathartic use
in certain circumstances. Hearing replies however is I think a trifle
suspect.

I don't talk to Him, He contacts me
when the undertaker was round asking my Mum, "Burial or Cremation ?",
my Mum couldn't decide, so he said "Damian ?", and then for the first
time, very clearly I heard "I want a Burial Lad", and I was so
pleasantly surprised I just said "Burial" to the undertaker
that was the most clear and crisp that I heard His voice, but now He
just kind of succours me, with "You're alright Lad" and "Light a
candle for me" , when I attend Mass
and when I put a Blackburn Rovers lapel badge on His grave, He told me
to take it off, and I took it off around midnight one night, and that
was when I saw a Spirit in the Cemetery, halfway to my Dad's grave
from reading the Bible and seeing that the Creator is a jealous God,
who is purported to support Everton by Evertonian fans, I suspect that
is why I was told to take the Rovers badge off
I am told by my Dad that they sit in Heaven most High wearing football
shirts, my Dad with a Rovers top, Jesus with an Israel top and God the
Creator with an Everton top
and I also know it is true about many mansions
I will leave it there for now, obviously you cannot get a true picture
of me and my relationship with my Dad from a message in a NG, but you
never know who is around the next corner - try attending a Catholic
mass sometime - today's mass was beautiful

You are aware, of course, that intercourse with the purported spirits
of the dead is a big no-no in RCC tradition. Have you related your
tales to your Priest, who is no doubt rather familiar with you.

Really? I'd always fancied that God, if there is a God, supports
Millwall - rather as he tends to support the army with the most
appropriate tactics, best soldiers, logistics staff, and equipment.

Darling, when I was a student I used to work as switchboard operator
and de-facto chucker out at Westminster Cathedral, Victoria, London,
and while I'm not adverse to a little high ritual, beauty isn't always
indicative of truth - as illustrated by the fact that I know for a
fact that Cardinal Hume wore blue M&S boxer shorts. Not a pretty
sight, I can assure you.

Not necessary to be an atheist, many atheists don't ... and,
if I must remind you, you posted this to our newsgroup, not
the other way around.
And, of course, you feel free to be insulting and nasty by
claiming that atheism is a 'sad state of affairs'. That's
actually a sad state of affairs itself - when a Christian
decides to get around the 'turn the other cheek' problem
by attacking first.

Paul Vitz is the author of a book which promotes the idea that atheists
areatheists because of bad experiences they had with their fathers.

Who would have thought that being abused by one's father would suddenly

The paradigm of a father up in the sky satifies our primal desire for a
father figure in our lives. It is a deeply subconscious need. However, what
value does a child have for the father figure in the sky that may in fact
reminds him of his earthly father whose may have abused that child. Its easy
to say that atheism can result from such a thing but the true cause of
atheism is education. It destroys faith in god because through education,
religion religion is relied on less and less to explain much of the
seemingly confusing world we live in. In general, atheists are more willing
and trained to challenge simple notions of how we percieve the world to
operate. They arrive at their beliefs through serious inquiry and a desire
to know what is true. This may come as a surprise to the religious, since
they have been indoctrinated to believe that the bad ol atheist is some sort
of misdirected fool and has strayed far from the truth. These childish
notions only add to the list of 1/2 truths that the religious are expected
to subscribe to blindly.
When it comes to fathers, we survive better if the father remains coupled
with the mother at least long enough to ensure the child and mother can fend
for themselves. Evolution has helped to ensure the survival of children
through pair bonding. Also know as *falling in love*, it is a measureable
cascade of chemical processes that collapes the ego so that the self
disolves in favor of the other and at the same time rewards the couple with
chemical *feel goods* also measureable, while they are in love. After the
normal 2 or 3 year period of chemical addicion, the chemicals wear off and
the man get the desire to sow some more seed. Thats nature for you! So how
to improve on nature? Well, just create an institution of marriage so that
the couple are held together under social and peer pressure and the fear of
failure in the eyes of god so that they *hang out* longer and everyone
wins.....maybe. It certainly works out better for the children unless they
are being abused by a man that wants to sow more seed, and ther will be
illegitimate children running around placing more burden on society for its
needs. But I'm getting off on a tangent.
