It's one of those questions that produces a genteel cringe - it's a bit
essentialist, a bit racist, can we just not talk about it please? - but
today we must because Hollywood, where sensitivity exists in inverse
proportion to global clout, has made a film of Arthur Golden's Memoirs
of a Geisha. It is set in Japan, and is about a Japanese woman, but
they have cast three Chinese actresses, Zhang Ziyi, Michelle Yeoh, and
Gong Li, in the main roles.

Just as there are many Frenchmen who look German and many Germans who look
French, there are many Chinese who look Japanese and vice versa. But just as
there are people who you "look French" or "look German", there are people

But in my opinion, the three actresses listed above do not look Japanese at

How many movie-goers have your perception of Oriental faces? The main point
is that these three (Ha! Do they get to sing G&S's "Three Little Maids"?)
have made a big name for themselves in the West, and the attention of the
paying public would be attracted. Which three Japanese actresses have an
equivalent box office drawing power?

Do Chinese and Japanese people really look alike?

My take on this (for what it worth and skin colour is the first
refugue of a facist)
In the South, they are like Southern Europeans.
The Whiter the better!
Hong Kong and Formosa!
In the north, again it is like Europe.
In the East you have the English, Scanadanavians and Germans
with their 'pasty' bland white colour.
Bejing and Tokiyo!
In the NorthWest, you have the Icelanders,Bretons, Welsh, Scots and Irish!
Red Hair and piggy white and pink complexion!
Outer and Inner Mogolia!
The facial features are delightfully different from the EU, but that is
what
Europeans see!

Do Chinese and Japanese people really look alike?

To non-Chinese and non-Japanese, I must admit that they do. But in Western
Europe, the majority of the Chinese one meets come from Hong Kong, or
southern parts of China - note I wrote "majority" - so it is the facial
features one tends to associate with Chinese in trying to discern them from
the Japanese. However, more and more Chinese from other parts of China are
now settling down in Western Europe, and their facial features of those
coming from Beijing and northern parts of China resemble those of the
Japanese. So unless we hear their conversation, it is almost impossible for
a Westerner to tell the difference in the looks of the Chinese and Japanese.
For those of you reading this newsgroup, I would like to say a word for the
Chinese - you never see one single Chinese standing in line for hand-outs at
the unemployment office in Western Europe ! "Clients of social welfare", as
we call them, are mostly Turks, Arabs, Pakistanis, and Eastern Europeans -
we extended a helping hand to these people when they were in need, and they
held on to that hand forever. Muslims for example do not integrate into our
society, they demand that we integrate into theirs and destroy ours.

That's as good a reason as any, wouldn't you say? I never thought that I

I have traveled extensively throughout the United States, visiting mostly
what are known as "Danish colonies" from the East Coat through the Midwest
and to the South West. In the eyes of the Western World, Denmark holds no.1
(!!!) as the most happy nation in the world. Click on
http://www1.eur.nl/fsw/happiness/ . This is because we Danes "take it easy"
and do not stress ourselves trying to grab at the things other peoples tend
to do. On the other hand, there is that negative side that personal drive
doesn't get you anywhere. That is why a very large number of Danes with
personal drive emigrated to the U.S. in search of better fortune - and made
it. This characteristic to drive forward also resulted in our not fighting
against danger such as Islam. Many of our young people, mostly amongst the
lesser educated, are drifting towards Nazism with the false hope of driving
the Muslim immigrants away, and this is a growing problem in our country -
both the Nazis and the Muslims.
Now, back to your retirement - yes, you will enjoy Denmark very much as a
pensioner. Copenhagen, for example, has the status and business environment
of a European capital city, but has the atmosphere of only a small village
compared to other European capital cities; the crime rate is far lower than
those in larger cities of the United States. You should talk to some Danes
in Minnesota and hear what they have to say about their motherland. There is
a small town in Iowa called Elk Horn, where 90 % of the population are
Danish descendants, and they even imported an old Danish windmill and built
it right in the middle of town - and it works. In California, there is also
a small Danish town called Solvang, where they inhabitants have built all
the Danish landmarks around the town - very quaint.
Incidentally "Jensen" is the most common of all Danish surnames - it is
equivalent to the English "Smith".

than it is in Denmark, though I suppose I might enjoy retiring there,
whether they let me draw unemployment or not.

Strangely, the only real book I have read about this was Jacob Riis's
_The Making of an American_, from a century ago, though I did talk with
my paternal grandmother (whose maiden name was also Jensen) about the
memories of her parents, her in-laws and her aunts and uncles who were
all from Denmark -- of course the patronymic gives away that these folks
all came from farming villages.

What a small world ! I made a speech on the Danish Constitution Day in
Stamford, CT, about the success of Danes who emigrated across the Atlantic
to the U.S., and I used Jacob Riis as my example of a hard-working person
who defied all odds to rise from poverty to fame (and a bit of fortune) in
pioneering methods of photography to help the New York police force.

It's not as if there are that many Danish-Americans who are famous as
Danish-Americans, though. The Nordic egalitarianism found its way the
the US, at least to the upper-Midwest.
No Dane or Danish-American could imagine acting like Donald Trump.

Victor Borge, Lauritz Melchior, Vitus Bering, Viggo Mortensen - to name a
few.
