Do you know about atheist chapel? |
Yes, it seems like oxymoron, but it really exists.
Two big city cemeteries in Sarajevo (Bare and Vlakovo) have four or
five special objects for teporary storing of the coffin during
funeral ceremonies. They all look almost the same, arc-form, and
inside there is one table with a coffin. In absence of better term,
the cemetery used word "chapels". There are five chapels: Islamic,
Ortodox, Catholic, Atheistic and Jewish (the last one exists only on
cemetery Bare). You can recognize them by signs: green moon, Greek
cross, Latin cross, red rose and star of David.
The cemetery was built in 1960s, when religious differences in Bosnia
were not so important like in 1990s.

So, we atheists have our own chapel in Serajavo!
In Indonesia where I went to work for three years, I had no choice. I
had to say I was a Christian because atheists and Jews were barred
from going and working there.
That was alright. In a way, I really am a Christian. When I smash my
thumb with the hammer, I immediately call out to Christ. I think
manger scenes at Christmas are cute and like to see "GOD" stamped on
our debased coinage. I even like the Ten Commandments if they would
just remove the three first ones, the deadwood about cowtowing to
"God."
But really, I follow the Christian marital system, its callender, its
cultural and intellectualf heritage, and its celebrations (I even hate
Santa Claus too!).
So, I wonder which chapel I should go to next time I am in the ruins
of Yugoslavia. Which one do you folks think?

Never having been a xtian, I refer to 'bodily functions', the act of
procreation or just "ouch" in that situation.
The actual expletive used depends on who's around to hear me at the time.
If I'm alone, it's like I've suddenly aquired a severe case of Tourett's
Syndrome.

Red rose, eh? Oh well, that's something for sure... and a nice symbol
(unless that rose consists only of thorns of course). :)

Hmmm, perhaps that explains why I have two tattooed on my person.
