Object: Does a Christian...
Does a Christian fully believe that not believing in Jesus results in
eternal roasting in hell? Does a Christian ever walk around a city centre
looking like he's just been sent back from an apocalyptic future? Does a
Christian ever say to himself, "all these people, all these good, innocent
people. Getting on with their peaceful lives, earning money to raise their
families. They've done nothing wrong, but they're all gonna die eternal!
They have absolutely no idea!! All these people, all these people ignorant
of the eternal suffering they're gonna face!! Aaaaaaaaaargh!!!!!"
Even if you don't, you can't say it isn't what you should be thinking, if
you believe everything said in the bible.
No, i'm not a Christian and for very good reason. Believing in the existence
of a place like hell is not a belief i would consider 'fulfilling'.

"Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are
servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal
for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of
a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of
reason than that of blindfolded fear."
Thomas Jefferson (Letter to Peter Carr, Aug. 10, 1787)

Most of the ones I've known gloat over the notion of someone going to Hell if
it's someone who disagrees with them and they aren't related by blood.
Sometimes even if they _are_ related by blood. This includes my own family. My
father bore a particular malice towards gays. Then, when I was 29, I came out.
Poor fella'. He just hasn't been the same since. You really have to feel bad
for some of these people, they just are _not_ very well equipped to deal with
reality. :-( The really tragic thing is that even when you point out the
specific gloating behavior, they are simply incapable of recognizing it as
anything other than "righteous anger" at best, "a testament to a kind and loving
God" at worst. My father's learned his lesson. He gloated, OH, how he gloated
at the thought of people burning in Hell just because they were attracted to
someone with the same general equipment. These days, while he still believes
homosexuality is wrong, he recognizes his former behavior as gloating and often
tells me how sorry he is for ever having been that way. He's taken many major
steps in the past few years. Disagree though we may on the particulars, I've
come to be really rather proud of how well my dad's responded to the whole
issue.
Anyway, drifting off the subject. Sorry 'bout that. :-#

Even if you don't, you can't say it isn't what you should be thinking, if
you believe everything said in the bible.

One has to be at least slightly fragmented to believe _everything_ in the Bible.

No, i'm not a Christian and for very good reason. Believing in the existence
of a place like hell is not a belief i would consider 'fulfilling'.

If it were true, I'd consider it "fulfilling", but only because that's how much
I value truth. Not because I think it's a good idea.

Depends on your actions.

Oh, I thought that 'God' fella had already decided who was to be 'saved'.

'Realism is seductive because once you have accepted the reasonable
notion that you should base your actions on reality, you are too often
led to accept, without much questioning, someone else's version of what

Actually, our actions have nothing to do with it.
All 'god' cares about is what we believe in. I could stand before your god
and describe how i donated a kidney, built a hospital, created a charity,
developed a cure for cancer, saved a child from a fire, saved 10 children,
20 children, 100 children, 1000 children.
Then the instant he find's out that i never actually believed in the one
begotten son of god, he explodes in a jealous rage and sends me to hell
forever.
