Does cancer cause creationism? |
Don't know if it's been discussed, but the idea keeps
springing to mind...
Millions of fundies are force-fed from birth on the idea
of a literally true bible. These same fundies are force
fed on many other religious notions, including faith
healing.
God doesn't make anyone sick -- accept for AIDS
patients -- but faith can, according to the whack
jobs, heal the sick. What logically follows is that if
you die from cancer it's because of a lack of faith.
Heck, a lack of faith even causes homosexuality,
according to the fundies. People with a powerful
faith are immune to homosexuality, according to the
fundies, and people who are gay can be cured with
the right faith-based treatment.
Anyhow, so most people don't have faith. They don't.
They may belong to a religion, they may "Practice"
a faith, but inside it's just empty except for the doubts.
"Unseen powers" are a nice idea, but most people
need something real to hold on to.
Science.
Religious authorities can't convince them -- no matter
how much they wish they would -- but science can.
Someone pretending to be a scientist who tells them
we didn't evolve, that we sprung up one day out of the
blue, can convince them that the bible is right.
See, you don't need any fake science credentials
to convince anyone with faith. And anyone with faith
is never going to wait until someone pretending to
be a scientist tells them it's okay to believe something.
But if you don't have any faith in religion, you need
someone whom you do have faith in to comfort you.
"Need."
Why bother? Why this need? Because you won't be
a social pariah... because no disease can kill you...
because you'll never be stuck in a wheelchair for the
rest of your life... because it means you're not gay...
beacuse no matter how bad things get you'll know
that they'll always get better... because you won't
have to be afraid of dying.

This, one would assume, includes priests and ministers - so these
fundies are being taught to have faith by people who don't have any.
I guess this makes sense, but I can't see how it makes HUMAN sense.
