Does God Have a Sense of Humour? Potentially a harmless debate! |
Seriously!
Arguably, a sense of humour, depends in part at on not knowing what
the punch line is.
Yet, we are told God is omniscient. Thus amongst other things, He's
always heard it before.
So what do think? And why.
And while I'm not omniscient, I can see the obvious joke, which I
could have made, but restrained myself. One trusts you'll do likewise!

Which book is that from? While I am a sci fi/fantasy fan, I have not had
the pleasure of reading any of his books (though did see "Starship Troopers"
with my sons--but I know how [in]accurate movie adaptations tend to be).
I hope so, for the writer's sake- worst sci-fi movie I've ever seen. I
couldn't decide if it was meant to be serious "action" or if it was a
failed attempt at parody.
The book is excellant. The movie was a butcher job.

Therion: I prefer the Heinlein analysis; God doesn't have much of a
sense of humor, but the Devil does...
Which book is that from?
I believe it is from "Job: A Comedy of Justice"
While I am a sci fi/fantasy fan, I have not had
the pleasure of reading any of his books (though did see "Starship Troopers"
with my sons--but I know how [in]accurate movie adaptations tend to be).
The film versions of Starship Troopers were absolutely nothing like the book.
What are his writings like? Anything that compares to other authors in the
genre?
He's the absolute master of speculative fiction. No one else has ever come
close.
A novel of his I would strongly recommend to everyone (particularly to those
reading this newsgroup) is "If This Goes On..." which can be found as the lead
story in a collection called "Revolt in 2100." It tells the story of a popular
revolt in the United States 88 years after it was taken over by a theocratic
dictatorship. Very chilling reading, particularly if you're following American
politics today and realize just how much George Bush and his policies sound
like First Prophet Nehemiah Scudder.

Having read the book, I'd say that has to be to its credit.
Imo, the worst of Heinlein's that I've read.

Reads to me that "laugh" would be more accurately translated as
"cackled," seeing as I'm not convinced that laughing at the unpleasant
fate of another indicates a sense of humour.

Trust me, it's "laugh", in the sense of "laugh at".
E.g.: Psalm 37:13
"Shall laugh" = Hebrew phrase "sachaq" (Qal), imperfect tense,
1) to laugh (usually in contempt or derison)
2) to sport with, tease or play
And you are quite right, this doesn't indicate a sense of humour.
Or at least what I think is humour.
More a warped sense of mocking for the pleasure of seeing others
suffer.

Look at it again. It seems like the laughter is directed toward the wicked
thinking that they can get away with breaking free from God and not obeying
Him and plotting against the righteous and thinking that they can do this
sort of thing without getting punished for it.
