Object: Does God Have a Sense of Humour? Potentially a harmless debate!
Seriously!
Arguably, a sense of humour, depends in part at on not knowing what
the punch line is.
Yet, we are told God is omniscient. Thus amongst other things, He's
always heard it before.
So what do think? And why.
And while I'm not omniscient, I can see the obvious joke, which I
could have made, but restrained myself. One trusts you'll do likewise!

I think it was Robin Williams who answered this well when he was discussing
the platypus.....it has the body of a mammal, the mouth of a duck....it is a
mammal, but it lays eggs ("Hey Darwin!!!! PPPPTTTTTTTHHHHHHH").
In a sci fi/fantasy novel (I forget which one--I think it may have been in
the "Dinosaur Planet" series by McCaffrey, but am not sure enough on that to
quote her), I saw something along the lines of, "God must have a sense of
humor...when humans were created with the amusement area in the middle of
the sewer system..."
I have always said that God has a great sense of humor, only she has not
told us mere mortals the punch line.

Yes, we are told that, ad nauseum.

I think that quantum electrodymics is the best way of calculating the

For the reasons you just outlined, he could not be a stand-up comic but he could
appear in sketches - in fact I think he *has* appeared in some Dave Allen
sketches.
He is (allegedly) a practical joker, after all he planted all those fossils and

He hides the punchline from Himself. How do you think we got free will?

===>"Free will" is a myth.
But the divine character does have humorous aspects
according to some of the authors depicting him in the biblical collection.
Just look at a few examples:
1. IN THE GARDEN
He tells A&E they will die the day they eat from that magic fruit.
When they eat and don't die, he as much as tells them
he was just kidding, but now they are no longer welcome in
his garden and cannot eat from that other magic fruit that
would keep them alive for ever.
2. IN THE FLOOD STORY
He declares he is sorry for having made man, so he will
destroy all living things.
Then he as much as tells Noah, he was just kidding, he will
leave a few humans and animals to start things over after
the Flood.
3. IN THE VIRGIN BIRTH STORY
He -- OK, one of his angels -- declares that if Mary lets him
get her pregnant, her son will be famous, a king over
Israel, inheriting the throne of his ancestor David.
Then, as it turns out, once again he was just kidding.
The kid will grow up to be sacrificed for the sins of
those wretched creatures who descended from the
ones he decided not to kill in the Flood.
4. IN THE SECOND COMING STORY
He, OK, his apostle Paulus, declares that if they
believe the Pauline message he and they will never die,
but will soon be transformed at the sound of trumpets
and, together with other chosen ones risen from
the graves, will ascend into heaven.
Then, of course, later he reminds people that divine time
is not the same as human time, so they must wait
a few more divine days, which just happen to be
several millennia to those wretched humans.
Indeed, LA DIVINA COMEDIA is written in the Bible for all
who reads it with the required sense of humor. -- L.

===>"Free will" is a myth.

You're mythtaken about that. Quantum uncertainty makes it certain!

But the divine character does have humorous aspects
according to some of the authors depicting him in the biblical

Just look at a few examples:

1. IN THE GARDEN
He tells A&E they will die the day they eat from that magic fruit.
When they eat and don't die, he as much as tells them
he was just kidding, but now they are no longer welcome in
his garden and cannot eat from that other magic fruit that
would keep them alive for ever.

Well, if you believe that a story about a talking snake and trees with
magical names is not an allegory, then maybe it's YOUR sense of humour
that's challenged, along with your imagination.

2. IN THE FLOOD STORY
He declares he is sorry for having made man, so he will
destroy all living things.

Yes, this is pretty odd, since the devil got in trouble in the first
place for suggesting that making man was a mistake....

Then he as much as tells Noah, he was just kidding, he will
leave a few humans and animals to start things over after
the Flood.

Of course you have to understand that Genesis is basically an attempt to
create a title deed for the holy land and dates from no earlier than
about 700BC.

3. IN THE VIRGIN BIRTH STORY
He -- OK, one of his angels -- declares that if Mary lets him
get her pregnant, her son will be famous, a king over
Israel, inheriting the throne of his ancestor David.

Instead He conquered the Roman empire in a 300-year project!
Or hey! Maybe THAT's what the angel was on about.

Then, as it turns out, once again he was just kidding.
The kid will grow up to be sacrificed for the sins of
those wretched creatures who descended from the
ones he decided not to kill in the Flood.

You got it wrong. He was both high priest and sacrifice at the same
time. And the really heavy part was done the night before, in the
garden. But hey, there's a serious side to Him as well as a humorous
one.

4. IN THE SECOND COMING STORY
He, OK, his apostle Paulus, declares that if they
believe the Pauline message he and they will never die,
but will soon be transformed at the sound of trumpets
and, together with other chosen ones risen from
the graves, will ascend into heaven.

Paul does seem to have had this notion, though his work was never
DECLARED to be inspired until long after this was clearly an error. So
much for the theory that the compilers of scripture only chose works they
knew to be error-free. Perhaps they had some other criteria in mind!

Then, of course, later he reminds people that divine time
is not the same as human time, so they must wait
a few more divine days, which just happen to be

Well, nowadays, we know that time is relative.

You're mythtaken about that. Quantum uncertainty makes it certain!

===>Cute play on words.
(But non sequitur).

But the divine character does have humorous aspects
according to some of the authors depicting him in the biblical

Just look at a few examples:

1. IN THE GARDEN
He tells A&E they will die the day they eat from that magic fruit.
When they eat and don't die, he as much as tells them

Well, if you believe that a story about a talking snake and trees with
magical names is not an allegory, then maybe it's YOUR sense of humour
that's challenged, along with your imagination.

===>It is satire, which is one form of humor.
Calling it "allegory"
is the invention of the apologists,
who fail to see the humor in it.

2. IN THE FLOOD STORY
He declares he is sorry for having made man, so he will
destroy all living things.

Yes, this is pretty odd, since the devil got in trouble in the first
place for suggesting that making man was a mistake....

===>Huh?
Where did THAT come form?
Not part of the Genesis story.

Then he as much as tells Noah, he was just kidding, he will
leave a few humans and animals to start things over after
the Flood.

Of course you have to understand that Genesis is basically an attempt to
create a title deed for the holy land and dates from no earlier than
about 700BC.

===>Have you read the "Book of J"?
It makes a good case for the "J" author being a woman,
and in my opinion one of the Queen of Heaven worshipers
Jeremiah and his fellow

===>Not what was promised.
Anyway, that was the work of the pagan emperor
in collusion with Saul/Pau's Gentile converts.

Or hey! Maybe THAT's what the angel was on about.

===>Hey, the angel never said any such thing.
The throne of the Gentile Roman emperor was definately
NOT the throne of the Jewish king David!

Then, as it turns out, once again he was just kidding.
The kid will grow up to be sacrificed for the sins of
those wretched creatures who descended from the
ones he decided not to kill in the Flood.

You got it wrong. He was both high priest and sacrifice at the same
time.

===>Sure, sure. Jesus was man and god at the ame time,
he was high priest and sacrifice at the same time, Messianic
King and losing rebel leader at the same time, sitting on
king David's imaginary throne and sitting on a heavenly throne
-- oh, and also on the throne of the Roman emperor at the same time.
Both black and white, square and circle, existing and non-existing,
a real Zen paradox.
I prefer to note what the first disciples are said to have believed:
i.e. that he was simply a man chosen, approved and used by
"God" as an instrument to show his magical powers.
(See Acts 2:22)

And the really heavy part was done the night before, in the
garden. But hey, there's a serious side to Him as well as a humorous
one.

===>Glad to see you at least notice there WAS a humorous side.

===>He CLAIMED to have received his "gospel" directly.
(Galatians 1:11-12
"I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached
is not something that man made up. I did not receive it
from any man, nor was I taught it; rather,
I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.")

So
much for the theory that the compilers of scripture only chose works they
knew to be error-free. Perhaps they had some other criteria in mind!

===>They obviously did.

Then, of course, later he reminds people that divine time
is not the same as human time, so they must wait
a few more divine days, which just happen to be
several millennia to those wretched humans.

Well, nowadays, we know that time is relative.

===>And that the "God" character of the Bible likes to play
funny games with people and their expectations.

Indeed, LA DIVINA COMEDIA is written in the Bible for all
who reads it with the required sense of humor. -- L.

Of course the funniest part of the joke is that those who refuse to laugh
are missing the whole punch line.

===>Clearly you are not one of those.
You notice the humor and able to laugh.
And that is good. -- L.

One trusts you'll do

likewise!

He hides the punchline from Himself. How do you think we got free

will?

There is no 'free will.'

Of course God has a sense of humor. He is laughing at atheists
right now.
Psalms 2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall
have them in derision.
I think God an Gabriel are having a knee slapper over most of usenet.

Hearing voices again?

Psalms 2:4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall
have them in derision.

2:5 "Then he will speak to them in his Anger, and he will Terrify them
in his wrath..."
Now I know where Jerry Sienfeld got his act from...

I think God an Gabriel are having a knee slapper over most of usenet.

You reckon?
Job 9:23 "If the scourge slay suddenly, He will laugh at the trial of
the innocent."
'Wicked' sense of humour, eh?
Pro 1:26 "I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your
fear cometh"
Now I can also see where 'Christians' get their sneering derision
from.
Very funny!
Luke 6:26 "...Woe unto you yhat laugh now! For ye shall mourn and
weep."
Yep, barrel'o'larfs.

Shhh Listen...
I hear you calling, voices are here again
I hear you whisper, taking control of me
Watch the dancing shadows run away
All alone once again, afraid
All these faces, changing their shapes on me
Isolated in my own world, will I ever be free?
Haunting figures around me, I want 'em to stay
They're always there to protect me
This is one thing you can't take away
Listen...
I hear you whisper in my own mind
Will it ever change?
Voices, I hear you calling...
I think this sums up their world quite nicely.

Which book is that from? While I am a sci fi/fantasy fan, I have not had
the pleasure of reading any of his books (though did see "Starship Troopers"
with my sons--but I know how [in]accurate movie adaptations tend to be).
What are his writings like? Anything that compares to other authors in the
genre?

I hope so, for the writer's sake- worst sci-fi movie I've ever seen. I
couldn't decide if it was meant to be serious "action" or if it was a
failed attempt at parody.

I thought it was a neo-con wet dream.
Mind you, when it was released, I was working in Malaysia, where in
some cinemas they keep the lights on to prevent the traditional back
row pass time. And they totally cut the shower scene, amongst others.
