Many, and perhaps even most, atheists are atheists because they cared
enough
about their beliefs to examine them and ask if they make any sense.
What you are saying implies that we actually believe in god (and
therefore,
that we are going to hell) and so we lie to ourselves to make
ourselves feel
better. But stop and think about it, if we really wanted to lie to
ourselves in order to feel better, we would be church-going
Christians. . .
I often ask myself: Without hell and genocide elements in Middle East
religions, will
many antitheists (hating religion) remain just atheists (ignoring
religion)?
And, will be theists less agressive in promoting their ideas?
Look at the many other social groups, except politics and religion.
The post stamp collectors do not try to convience the non collectors.
Non-football-players do not think that football players wasted their
lives.
Footballers and stamp collectors don't harm anyone.
