Bush wishes Howard well in election
United States President George W Bush has sent Prime Minister John Howard a
good luck message ahead of Saturday's federal election.
Mr Howard said while he had not spoken to Mr Bush for several weeks, he had
been given messages via US Ambassador Tom Schieffer.
"I'm a good friend of his but we don't talk regularly, any more than I talk
regularly to (British Prime Minister Tony) Mr Blair," Mr Howard told
reporters at his final press conference of the campaign.
"I haven't spoken to him during the campaign and I wouldn't expect to.
"He's a great bloke and he's very important, but I am focused on this
election campaign. And he's a good bloke but he doesn't have a vote in
Australia."
Asked if he had received a good luck message from the president, Mr Howard
said: "He has sent me messages through the ambassador."
Mr Bush was interested in the result and would no doubt be informed by his
own people as early as possible, Mr Howard said.
He expected to speak to Mr Bush soon after the election, irrespective of the
outcome, but the person he most wanted to speak to early on was Indonesian
president-elect Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
However, he dismissed suggestions he would have to explain his policy of
preemptive strikes on other countries to the Indonesian leader.
"I think he will understand exactly what I'm talking about and he will know
that it is non-threatening to Indonesia, non-threatening because the
circumstances under which it might happen are circumstances where another
country would be either unwilling or unable and I have no doubt the spirit
of cooperation between Australia and Indonesia would never see that occur,"
he said.
Mr Howard said he had no regrets about joining Mr Bush in invading Iraq,
despite the findings of the Iraq Survey Group that there were no stockpiles
of weapons of mass destruction.
"I think people will know that the decision we took at the time was taken in
good faith on the basis of the information that was available to us at the
time," he said.
"And I think people will know also that the world is a better place without
Saddam Hussein and people will know that we have to deal with the here and
now. And the here and now is whether or not we stay the distance, help Iraq
to a democratic future, or whether we are willing to cut and run."
