UPDATE:
DR. YOUNES SHEIKH TO SPEAK AT AMERICAN ATHEISTS CONVENTION!
American Atheists is privileged to honor Dr. Younes Sheikh at our
upcoming National Convention to be held March 27-27, 2005 in Philadelphia,
PA.
*DR. M. YOUNES SHEIKH* attracted international attention when in October,
2000, he was indicted and imprisoned in his native Pakistan on charges of
"blasphemy."
A physiology professor, he was charged for this offense by stating in
response to a student's question during a medical lecture that the Prophet
Muhammad was a non-Muslim before the age of 40. In August 2001 he was
sentenced to death. This led to a worldwide campaign by Atheist,
Freethought, Humanist and other human rights groups, including a
demonstration in Washington, DC outside the Embassy of Pakistan organized
by American Atheists. President Ellen Johnson met with officials from the
Embassy and called the immediate release of Dr. Sheikh and abolition of the
inhumane religious blasphemy statutes.
Dr. Sheikh's case eventually reached the Islamabad Session Court in early
November, 2003. Dr. Sheikh refused legal counsel and represented himself
pro se. After the third hearing on November 20, the judge acquitted Sheikh
and ordered his immediate release. The American Atheist National
Convention is privileged to honor Dr. M. Younes Sheikh as a courageous and
outspoken defender of intellectual freedom, secularism and human rights!
