Dresden victims remembered
A church service was held on Sunday evening in commemoration of the
devastating Allied bombing of Dresden in World War II that killed an
estimated 35,000 residents 60 years ago.
In a sign of reconciliation, clergy from Coventry Cathedral in England
- gutted by German bombing in 1940 - presented a cross to Dresden's
Frauenkirche, or Church of Our Lady.
The Dean of Coventry Cathedral, which was itself destroyed by German
bombers in 1940 - said the anniversary should not be about hatred or
revenge. The Very Reverend Irvine said Coventry and Dresden had both
suffered the devastating effects of war.
The Church of Our Lady was left in ruins for decades by communist East
Germany as an anti-war memorial, but has been lavishly rebuilt since
Germany's 1990 reunification.
On February 13, 1945, the British RAF Bomber Command launched a
devastating raid on Dresden, destroying the city, which was known as
"The Balcony of Europe" for its stunning architecture.
The following day US bombers launched a second attack. Official
estimates suggest that around 35 thousand people died but some claim
the figure was closer to 400 thousand.

Kurt Vonnegut was a US POW held there at the time.
He gives an account of the bombing
in his book "Slaughterhouse-Five".
It is worth a read.

There is a film based on this book, having the same title. I saw it on
one of my trips to the US, and I liked it.
I was in Dresden several times, first in 1968 and then in 1991 after
reunification.
In 1968 there still were many ruins, only the Zwinger and few classical
building had been reconstructed. Dresden was not very high on the list
of priorities.
In 1991 I found many people of Dresden to be very loyal to their home
town, some told me how much voluntary work they had put into rebuilding
the Semper opera house and other old buildings. And the Frauenkirche
(church of our lady) is beeing rebuilt from donations, not from
government money (yes, I gave some money, too).
What I like in this context, is that with the average citizen of Dresden
you find good knowledge on what happened in February 1945, but no hate.
Most people know both sides of the coin.
If you travel to Germany, try to see Dresden. I could give you some
hints where to go.
And if your computer has an Athlon chip in it, there is a good chance it
was produced in Dresden, AMD has a big fab there.

I was in Berlin in '91. Several people told me that I should
really see Dresden. It didn't fit in my plans but I remember
their recommendation and I remember Vonnegut's writings.
I hope to be able to see Dresden and Berlin again some day.

Cool. I'd like to see that too. :)

It was sad. I'm glad that people are 'coming together'....but everytime I
think of Dresden, I also think if Krystalnacht.
When I think of the 35,000-400,000 who died there, the figure 6,000,000
enters my mind. Whenever I think of the innocents who died in the bombings
of Dresden and other cities in Germany, I think of London.
.....and who started the killing.

Dresden was a 2 day holocaust. Germany lost over 10 million people
during the war and countless millions afterwards. Many of the
atrocities perpetrated upon the Germans are finally coming to light. Do
not diminish their suffering. They lost a war littered with war crimes
by all sides.

Indeed. Even dedicated a post to you.
"J's" surely not a hypocrite, ya think?
Heaven forfend!
And I didn't even have to open a free email account to do it.
His record suggests that if you challenge his BS, he'll create a

Maybe even 4 or 5. <g>
I can't wait. :)
Thankyou for admitting your forgery.(It's documented).
It was in response to your claim about being able to post forgeries,
Jon. OF COURSE I "admit" showing you how it's done. Whoosh!

LOL. You really are a pathological liar, "J".
As if "Jon", "IBen", and your plethora of other socks tripping all over the
same threads, in the same ng's, with identical NNTP's isn't enough, why not
try and explain this thread, "Jon"?:

A vote for Pat Buchannon is a vote for algore. Look at how Perot
handed
clinton a couple wins. Any other time I would consider looking at a 3rd
party candidate but not this year. Too much is at stake this year.
L.C.
I would say that he changed his mind. I think that "quite some time" would
be well represented by four years, don't you?

"So.... It is entirely appropriate and justifiable to firebomb cities
full of
civilians just because the government is committing atrocities?"
It's their country. It was up to the Germans to prevent Hitler from
coming into power. It was up to them to depose him after he did. If
they stand around with their fingers up their asses while he tries to
conquer the world and commit genocide using them and their country as a
resource, then they have to expect to suffer. The idea that the Brits
and the Americans should accept rules of engagement that would prevent
them from winning a war against someone who accepted no such rules is
absurd.

<snip to>>>
Dresden was a 2 day holocaust. Germany lost over 10 million people
during the war and countless millions afterwards. Many of the
atrocities perpetrated upon the Germans are finally coming to light. Do
not diminish their suffering. They lost a war littered with war crimes
by all sides.
Oddly enough, I do not "diminish their suffering" I just put it into
context.
Quite frankly, the Germans of that time had a choice that few of us have
ever had to face; for them it was a black and white choice, and every adult
German did know what was going on; if you don't think so, I suggest you read
the book 'Tales from a Child of the Enemy" by Ursula Duba. Even those who
cried later 'But I didn't know!!"....they knew.
What did they THINK happened to their neighbors, the Jews, whose dishes and
land they suddenly owned now? Where did they think all those slave laborers
came from, who did the work? How many people did it take to deal with the
trains and the supplies and the buildings....and the smells of the camps?
They knew. They all knew someone who had lost a handicapped child or a
mentally ill aunt, all wondered about the vacant house down the
street...they knew.
They knew that they were not the ones being bombed at the beginning; they
were doing the bombing and they knew.
And they had choices. Many of them fought against it; resisted it, aided the
Jews and others who were being exterminated. Most did not. Most chose to
turn their heads; whether from agreement or from fear of their own lives, it
matters not. They knew.
So yes. They suffered.
And I am sorry that they did, especially for the children who did NOT know.
Children like Ursula who lives in utter shame at what her parents
knew....and did nothing about, and who saw to it that their children got a
very different message about that time, indeed.
But let's not kid ourselves, OR our children in turn; when you do something
this heinous, and get hurt for doing so, sympathy for your pain must always
come with the reason you suffered it. So, along with sympathy for Dresden,
always, ALWAYS, mention Krystalnact. When you talk of the plight of the
hungry German children, always, ALWAYS speak of Treblinka.
