Object: Dutch propose banning ROP's head bag
As revolting the concept is of a culture that requires their women to wear
bags over their heads, lest their men be tempted to commit rape, I can't
condone the idea of a law against it. I just don't understand the Dutch.
They're a nation that has lead the way in so many areas of libertine
lawmaking, and yet they are now looking to ban the Burqa, clearly violating
their citizen's rights to practice an aspect of their religion. The
pretence is public safety and order, although I fail to see how such
objective are advanced. I find them to be a confusing people. Is this the
same nation that chased Hirsi Ali out of the country for speaking out
against but not offering to illegalize Islamic treatment of women? Is this
the same nation that sympathized with the murder of their won Theo Van Gogh
by a home grown Jihadi? I'm hoping that some Dutchman or someone
knowledgeable about Holland today can help me out here to understand just
what the mood of that country is.

But how does the burqua stop women from wanting to rape men?

I can't
condone the idea of a law against it.

It's a form of imprisonment, dude. I thought you were all for forcing
muslims to be free at the point of a gun, if need be, when it came to
Iraq. This is nothing so severe, since these people are voluntarily
coming to a new host country. You know that in a number of muslim
countries foreigners are often expected to adopt local dress in pretty
short order.

I just don't understand the Dutch.
They're a nation that has lead the way in so many areas of libertine
lawmaking

Yep, all the stuff you're against.

, and yet they are now looking to ban the Burqa, clearly violating
their citizen's rights to practice an aspect of their religion.

It's only their right to practice religion in a way that doesn't harm
society or the ignorant practitioners. Burquas do have health effects,
from causing vitamin A deficiencies to making it dangerous to operate
motor vehicles. Furthermore, it sets a bad example for young girls, who
see yet more examples of passively subjugated adult women.
Us lefties can see the danger of muslim theocracy in society. What's the
matter with you? I would have thought you'd be down with the ban in a
dawdle.

So much is obvious.

They're a nation that has lead the way in so many areas of libertine
lawmaking, and yet they are now looking to ban the Burqa, clearly violating
their citizen's rights to practice an aspect of their religion.

Kind of sad, if a god creates people in such a way that they aren't
able to live in modesty without strange garments or headgear.

The
pretence is public safety and order, although I fail to see how such
objective are advanced.

Well, you already said it: you don't understand the Dutch.

I find them to be a confusing people. Is this the
same nation that chased Hirsi Ali out of the country for speaking out
against but not offering to illegalize Islamic treatment of women?

Yup. we can't offend the mohammedans, what?
Mrs. Ali was send packing because she lied. However, had she done
exactly the same for a left wing party, she'd still be there. (NOVA
isn't exactly a right wing TV program.)

Is this
the same nation that sympathized with the murder of their won Theo Van Gogh
by a home grown Jihadi?

If we're talking about Holland, most likely yes.

I'm hoping that some Dutchman or someone
knowledgeable about Holland today can help me out here to understand just
what the mood of that country is.

Depends on who you are talking with. I personally see mohammedans as
the biggest social problem we face since the German Occupation. So I
am -of course- biased.
Should you talk with a left oriented person, you get a different
story. Right now we have an election going on, so this IS big news.
Political candidates try to gain last minute advantages just before
the ballot.
The main stream parties try not to talk about what worries people
most: mohammedans who do not want to integrate into our society.
For example, most people see the genocide on Armenians as an
established fact. One can have two nationalities in The Netherlands
(for now). So several candidates have Dutch and Turkish nationality.
Those candidates do NOT accept the genocide on Armenians as a fact.
Because Turkish law forbids this. All except for 2 parties withdrew
their candidacies. The two remaining are the Greens (ultra left wing)
and D'66 - who are polled for no seats anyway.
People are quite offended by this behaviour (of those duo nationality
candidates). Wouter Bos(lim), leader of the socialists, went as far as
to apologies for this genocide. Which not only offended Armenians and
Kurds, but also cost him a lot of possible votes from his main stream
electorate.
Now, mind you: all left wing parties (PvdA, SP, GL - being the labour
party, the Maoist Trotskist party and the Greens) are courting the
mohammedan vote seriously in this election. But they tend to forget
that mainstream voters aren't mohammedan but Dutch.
PvdA is losing almost by the day, but seems to recover a bit of lost
territory. They started their campaign tagged for +45 seats. Today,
after the brilliant leadership of W Bos they appear to have lost at
least 15 seats...
The SP (Socialist Party, but read that as Maoist Party) Maoists are
doing so far splendid. Proof you don't need a brain to vote. If Jan
Ma(o)rijnissen is replaced by GW Bush, they might even win... They are
polled so far around 25 seats.
The Greens are tagged for about 7 seats, not wining much, nor loosing
a lot.
The PvdA has been in government many times, but the SP and GL never.
It seems not unlikely they won't this time.

What's to stop an assassin from putting on a burqa, hiding a firearm
under it, and going out in the streets to do his work with no danger
of being recognized?
How long do you think someone could walk the streets of, say, San
Diego, wearing a ski mask with eye holes cut in it in the summer?
