Man sent to jail for assault

"IT'S like a cancer, this kind of behaviour."
Judge John Robertson made the remark yesterday when he jailed a man
for indecently assaulting two young boys during a church camping trip
at Peachester.
The 53-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the victims,
pleaded guilty in Maroochydore District Court to shining a torch on
the groin areas of a 14-year-old and a 10-year-old boy while camping
two years ago.
Crown legal officer Sandra Cuppina said the man made inappropriate
comments, touched the boys' private parts and exposed his penis to one
of the boys.
The camping trip, involving a number of families, was organised by the
man's church congregation in 2004.
Barrister Steve Barclay said the congregation had allowed his client
to remain a member despite a prior sex offence but had since
ex-communicated him.
Mr Barclay said the man's wife had separated from him and the elder of
his two sons had not spoken to him since the latest offences came to
light.
Judge Robertson sentenced the man to 18 months in jail, suspended
after six months in prison.
