Former pastor gets life for killing wife

PASCAGOULA -- A local preacher who stabbed his wife to death in 2004
because he thought she was having an affair, was sentenced Wednesday
to life in prison after pleading guilty to murder in Jackson County
Circuit Court
Judge Robert Krebs sentenced Amos Hicks, 53, of Moss Point, after a
brief hearing in which Hicks admitted stabbing his wife, Lena Hicks,
51, with a knife at her apartment at the Azalea Park Apartments on
Nov. 27, 2004.
Under state law, Hicks will not be eligible for parole until he is 65
and he will have to petition the court for release. During the plea
hearing, Lena Hicks' brother, Benny Montgomery, told the court that
his sister's murder had devastated the family and catapulted their
mother into a state of senility, but that the family was ready for
closure.
District Attorney Tony Lawrence said during the hearing that the facts
surrounding the killing showed that before arriving at the apartment,
Hicks armed himself with a knife and a gun and entered with a key that
he had secretly copied after helping his wife move into the apartment.
After Hicks stabbed Lena Hicks, he retrieved his gun from his car and
attempted to enter the apartment again, shooting the door four times.
He then tried to enter through a window where he was fought off by
another man who was in the apartment at the time.
"It is a tragedy for the Hicks family and for their church family,"
Lawrence said. "When people arm themselves to settle disputes,
especially marital ones, this is what can happen."
At the time of the murder, Hicks was the senior pastor of Church of
the Living God in Moss Point.
During a preliminary hearing in Pascagoula Municipal Court, police
Detective Shelia Jenkins, said that Hicks believed his wife, who moved
into the apartment after the couple separated, was cheating on him.
Lena Hicks and Darriel Wills were in the bedroom area when Lena Hicks
heard something and got up. A struggle ensued between Amos and Lena
Hicks in the living room, after which she reentered the bedroom and
told Wills her husband had stabbed her.
Officers responding to the disturbance call at the apartment found
drops of blood on the sidewalk leading to the apartment, four bullet
holes in the front door, blood at the door, broken glass from the
living room window and blood on the walls, Jenkins said.
They also found Lena Hicks bleeding from a chest wound and in critical
condition. Officers tried to stop the bleeding while paramedics were
in route, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jenkins said Lena Hicks' autopsy, indicated that two knife blows had
gone through the same area near her heart and lungs and she had also
been stabbed on her right thigh.
After the assault, Amos Hicks called Roy Lee Goldsmith, associate
pastor at Hicks' church. Jenkins said the investigation revealed that
Goldsmith's wife, Martha, answered the phone and Amos Hicks told her
that he had stabbed his wife.
Goldsmith told police that Hicks had told him that he intended to find
his wife and Wills together.
Lena Hicks' brother, Toney Montgomery, speaking for her family, said,
"All we can say right now is our sister has 100 percent support from
around the country."
